Fishing Report

PLEASE NOTE INFORMATION FOR DAILY FISHING REPORT IS GATHERED THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND UNDATED THE FOLLOWING MORNING - THEREFORE INFORMATION WILL ALWAYS BE A DAY BEHIND CURRENT DATE

July 25, 2010

Fishing's been excellent, walleye really hitting right now.  We were going to fish this morning but it's too windy aka rough water.  Might be able to get out later.

July 23, 2010

Dan saw the Sampson group (cottagers) fishing by Deep Water Point yesterday while on his boat ride.  I spoke with them last night and they've been doing really well with their fishing.  They are doing catch-and-release and have gotten lots of different varieties, not fishing for anything in particular.  Bass, pickerel and perch mostly.

July 22, 2010

Sorry, nothing much to report.  Not much fishing going on around here although our one cottage went out earlier in the week and caught 10 fish.  Don't know what kind or where.  Hopefully can update over the weekend.

July 12, 2010

The Duncans, who were our guests this past week, stated the bass fishing is excellent this year.  Caught lots and all of a really good size.

July 10, 2010

Dan took Carolyn and Gary fishing yesterday morning.  Dan caught two beauties, both around 6 pounds.  Needless to say, we ate them for supper last night.  Put a picture of one of them on our site under the "Fishing" tab, bottom right hand margin.  Check it out.  Fishing's good - shads are gone, they're hungry again.  Carolyn didn't catch but Gary had something huge on but it snapped the line.  Dan said it was the fish he ended up catching :o)

July 2, 2010

Considering Lake Nipissing has been all stirred up, Dan went out this morning and caught his limit plus.  He and Frank caught 9 but had to let 3 go.  Dan put Andy Yu's cottage on fish so they're happy.

June 30, 2010

Sorry, last two days have been blow days so nothing to report.  Still blowing today also.

June 28, 2010

Dan's definitely on fish!!  He went out the past two mornings with Andy and Frank and the boat limited out both times.  He caught a nice 23 incher but it went back.  I went out with Mike and Reta yesterday morning and all I caught was the smallest perch known to mankind.  Mike caught a 17 incher that also went back.  Dan showed Mike where to go last night and they limited out.  Reta caught a nice 27 incher.  Now that Dan's found the fish, we'll be going out this week for sure.

June 25, 2010

We heard yesterday that the fishing's back on and is excellent.  They aren't in the usual spots but once you find them, you nail them.  Will find out more over the next few days.

June 21, 2010

Sorry, nothing to report.  No one's been fishing recently.  Haven't seen many boats out.  The shads come in, the fishing comes to a dead stop.  They should be just about done now so fishing'll pick up shortly.  I'm sure there will be people fishing this weekend so will keep you posted.

June 20, 2010

Seems I lied yesterday.  Dan told me nothing was being caught but he only talked to one group.  Everyone did well in the morning in 27 feet of water.  Fish died off right around 11:00.  Dan and I went out and didn't catch much but we went out too late.  Lots of walleye, perch and bass.  Blair, one of our guests was telling me about a new invading species of fish called the Northern Snakehead.  It's a nasty fish that can grow up to 1.8 metres (5' 10") and will go after humans.  It can survive 4 days out of water and can actually walk.  It's been found in the U.S. and now Canada, coming from Asia (of course).  For more info, google it or go to http://www.invadingspecies.com  Nasty little sucker I don't want to see in Lake Nipissing.

June 19, 2010

Nobody's catching any walleye to speak of.  It's one of those cases where you have to find the hole and limit out.  It's just finding the fishing hole.  During shad season, that's usually the case so it should pick up in the next few days (hopefully).  I wouldn't mind fishing this morning but don't think I can get Dan out.  We'll see...

June 13, 2010

Fish are on but they are now in the summer spots.  It's early but that's expected because the water is so warm.  It's at least 17 degrees celcius as the shads have hatched but they're biting in, like I mentioned, the summer spots.  Anywhere from 25-30 feet of water.  I'm not stating exact spots, last time I did, 15 boats showed up.  Stay here, I'll let you know where.

June 12, 2010

Fishing in our bay was a waste of time last night.  The occasional fish caught.  We don't know if they've already started moving out or if the weather's affecting them.  The Adams group did indicate when they were fishing by the bumble bee buoy yesterday afternoon there were a ton of chad flies so could be the fish are feeding on them (as they usually do).  Still our guests did manage to get fish in other spots yesterday.

June 11, 2010

Nothing much to report just yet.  Couple of guys in the Adams group caught a couple of wally's the night before last but nothing much caught yesterday.  Our bay was calm again last night so nothing was biting.  See what they catch today.

June 9, 2010

Dan and I went fishing for a bit last night and needn't have bothered.  Nothing was biting.  Lake Nipissing was like glass in our bay and with the coldfront coming through causing the change in pressure, nothing was biting.  No one caught anything that we could see other than a couple of sheephead.  Once the expected rain comes through and the pressure changes, things'll pick up.

June 7, 2010

Dan and I drifted from 10' to 7' of water in our bay last night using jigs and worms.  We limited out and caught two slot lines (17" and 21") that went back.  Mark Vivier (from our park) fished Callander Bay and also limited out so fishing's great right now.  Dan and I are going to try floating jigs and bottom bouncers tonight.  Want to get our 8 in the freezer before the chad flies come in.  Saw one in the water last night so the next bout of warm weather may bring them out.

June 6, 2010

Dan and I fished last night in 12' in our bay and only caught a couple of perch.  As soon as we moved in to 7 feet, we nailed the walleye.  Caught 4 in 5 minutes, which was all we wanted (for supper) and could have gotten more but we ran out of worms.  Right at dusk.  Mike and Reta stayed in 12' and only caught 2.

June 5, 2010

The morning fish yesterday was successful for Art Burlo's group, they did very well.  One fella, whom I was told has never caught a pickie on Lake Nipissing, landed a 27" walleye.  Last night in our bay wasn't as good as usual but then again, there were 25 boats fishing in Greening Bay last night and it isn't a very big bay.  No way Dan and I were going out there with that many boats.  Mike, Reta and the boys went out and they only caught 4 wally's.  When you have that many boats, I think it decreases your chances of limiting out.  Could have something to do with the weather also as it was raining as the front moved in.

June 4, 2010

Don't think the fishing was as good in our bay last night as earlier in the week.  Go figure.  At one point, there were 25 boats in our bay.  I don't fish when there are that many boats around.  Can't drift and it's just too many lines out at once.  Cold front came through yesterday though so see how the fishing is today.

June 3, 2010

All 3 gentlemen in Mike Weber's group limited out Tuesday night (first time since they've been fishing Lake Nipissing) so Dan and I decided to go out last night.  Only two of Mike's group went out and limited out again, catching 6 walleye before 7:00 by trolling from point to point in our bay.  As for Dan and I, we couldn't catch a fish if our lives depended on it.  I caught a perch and Dan caught one good sized wally.  I released it.

June 2, 2010

Walleye still in the bay, still lots of boats every evening.  Catching in deeper water (25+ feet) during the daytime.

June 1, 2010

All of our guests are doing really well with the walleye.  Particularly in the evening hours, right in our bay.  Most are catching their limits, especially the locals.  Dan and I haven't been out since the weekend and will likely go tonight or Wednesday.  Need a feed of fish.

May 30, 2010

Let the slaughter begin!!  The fish are definitely one right now.  Ron Hyde's group just nailed the fish yesterday.  One boat of 3 caught 17 walleye in 6.5 feet of water in South Bay.  They had to release 8 slot-size and kept the rest.  Dan and I went out last night in our bay and I caught 3 wally's, one perch, Dan caught 2 wally's and two huge sheepshead.  There were 15 boats in our bay and everyone did well.  We started catching around 8:00 in 10 feet and then went to seven feet around 9:00.  The water was calm last night too so I'd really like to get out when there's a good chop!!

May 28, 2010

Fishing was good for Ron Hyde's group today.  They caught pickerel, 5 pike and a 44" muskie.  Muskie only took 10 minutes to land and it didn't survive so it was either sick or more likely had already been caught and released.  By the time they were done cleaning all their fish, they had 23 lbs. of it for their fry.  Fifteen guys, 23 lbs.  lots of good eating.  All our fishermen are out fishing this evening in our bay so we'll see how they do and I'll update tomorrow.  There's a good chop going on so should bring home some wally's.

May 27, 2010

The Hyde group didn't really fish yesterday as Lake Nipissing kicked up and they had to come in.  That said, they caught two nice sized pikes in South Bay and missed something really big.  Got it to the boat and lost it.  Think maybe a muskie or another really large pike.  Haven't talked to the Peters group yet this morning to see how they did at the French.  No boats were in our bay last night so no info there.

May 26, 2010

Two, two-man boats caught 6 pickerel apiece yesterday evening in our bay so the walleye are definitely moving in.  Caught a bunch of perch and a sheephead also.  Our American guests caught a pike yesterday but don't know the size and one walleye off the bumble-bee buoy yesterday morning.  They were heading to the French today so will know more when they return.  Dan and I may fish tonight if the weather holds.

May 24, 2010

A variety of fish was caught throughout the day yesterday.  Pike, bass, pickerel and perch.  Not all of our guests are serious/avid fishermen but those that are, were catching.  Still pretty early in the season but from what I hear, the spawn is now over.  All the fish cleaned were empty.

May 23, 2010

Pickerel being caught by everyone but still in deeper water.  Around 25' feet is what I'm hearing.  Dan Peters group (the gentlemen from the States) went out to the Manitou's yesterday and caught some good keeper perch as well as a walleye.  Dan caught a walleye in the bay last night so they're just starting to move in.  Reta and I both caught perch last night but no pickies yet.  Try again today.  Andrew Lee's group is slowly accumulating enough for a fry but they aren't trying too hard either.  Alot of the walleye being caught is slot line.

May 22, 2010

First entry of the spring fish and yes, pickerel were being caught yesterday.  Still haven't moved in to Greening Bay but are starting.  Anywhere from 14-20 feet of water is what I'm hearing.  I'll know more today.  Our usual ice fishing spot yielded a limit of walleye for our neighbour but he said they were still full of eggs and milk.  That was earlier in the week and the pickerel caught yesterday had nothing so looks like they've completed the spawn.  We're hoping the low water hasn't affected where they've spawned but we won't know for a few years yet and the ministry certainly won't say anything to the contrary.  Keep you posted for sure.

March 8, 2010

This will be my last fishing report until the spring.  I would like to thank all our ice fishing guests of 2010 and hope you all had a great fry!!  Just to let everyone know...the pickerel/walleye will be here in the spring (for sure) and I don't think you'll have to work too hard to get them in the boat.  Word is the natives haven't been catching this winter either because they can't find them.  With two winters in a row producing little to no walleye, boat fishing will be fantastic for them this year.  Last spring was a remarkable year for walleye as the "slaughter" was minimal that winter so it'll be the same this year.  I'm willing to bet there will be more caught over the slot this year as well as the 15 inchers.  See you in the spring.

February 28, 2010

This is the first time ever that Paula and Alf actually caught some fish with us.  In the past, it's always been great fishing before they get here and then it dies off.  We caught a slew of perch yesterday and Alf even caught a herring as he was rolling up.  Dan was the winner.  The man actually caught a muskie.  It was just a baby, about 3 lb., but still.  Greening Bay has now caught every fish available in Lake Nipissing this winter.  Everything but a sturgeon, that is, but one was caught in Greening Bay this past spring.  From the looks of things, the spring, summer and fall fish should be fantastic for walleye.  We've got just enough bait left for Dan and I to fish a few times before Lake Nipissing shuts down for the season so we're going to try a few different spots on the lake and see what gives.  Will keep you posted.

February 27, 2010

Going fishing with Paula and Alf right shortly to catch some of the morning fish.  Will let you know how we do tomorrow but suspect it'll be good as we have a low pressure which is continuing to fall.

February 26, 2010

Fishing was excellent yesterday.  Low pressure, non-stop biting.

February 25, 2010

Morning fish was excellent yesterday and into the afternoon.  Of course, as soon as I got out there it started to slow down.  There was something big sucking on my line, never did get it but think it was a pike.  Dan's out there this morning and called to say it's a slaughter.  Getting as much good sized perch as he can as we're having a fry this weekend with some friends.

February 24, 2010

Fishing was good yesterday.  Non-stop perch and our one guest caught a big whitefish right at dusk.  Pressure was low but on the rise today.  I'm hoping to get out there later this afternoon.

February 23, 2010

Fishing was really good until around 3:00 yesterday afternoon and then it just died off.  Likely a pike or another predator around.  Pressure low but conflicting reports on whether it's rising or dropping.  I think it's still dropping.  Haven't heard how the fishing is just yet for this morning.

February 22, 2010

We've got two groups in this week and then we're pulling the plug on the ice fishing for the season.  The pickerel have pretty much finished feeding for the winter and there's no amount of perch that'll make me pay $6.00/dozen for chubbs.  That's 50 cents per minnow and they aren't even shiners.  I think the bait suppliers are really taking advantage right now but even they're having a tough time getting chubbs.  I don't think there will be any bait available after the weekend.  That said, they've already caught fish this morning and there's a low pressure coming in so hopefully it'll stick around for the rest of the week.

February 21, 2010

Fishing was slow all over Lake Nipissing yesterday.  Was a beautiful sunny day but the pressure was really high.  I only caught 7 perch all afternoon.  There was a nice whitefish kinda caught with a very interesting story - see my daily blog...

February 20, 2010

Fishing slower than it's been yesterday.  Pressure was on the rise, it's high today and continuing to rise.  Don't care.  I'm going fishing outside this afternoon as soon as I can get out there.  It's just a beautiful day and I don't even care if I catch.  Our guests seem happy enough with what they are catching so all is good in the world.

February 19, 2010

Fishing ok yesterday but a little slower.  Pressure on the rise.  I caught a nice size pike but lost it on the lip of the hole.  Released all the perch.  Full house this weekend so I'll have something to report tomorrow.

February 18, 2010

Fishing was good yesterday but not as good as the day prior.  Pressure still low but on the rise.  The gentleman who is a retired marine biologist and has worked with the MNR in the past had an extremely sensitive camera down the hole yesterday.  It was entertaining for everyone as you could see everything.  We have an excellent ecology where we are.  Could see the water spiders, plugs, small bait up to the large fish.  They said it looked like an early Japanese monster movie when they caught site of a mud puppy.  Too cool.  Apparently if the pickerel aren't biting anymore, they are done feeding for the winter as they've filled up on smelt.  So there ya have it folks from someone in the know.

February 17, 2010

Everyone came home with a pail of fish yesterday.  Need I say more?  We have an MNR expert fishing with us this week and he indicated we are definitely in the right spot.  He said the pickerel weren't biting last year due to the cold water temps but this year, they are following the smelt and just aren't hungry.

February 16, 2010

Fishing was great yesterday.  Pretty much non-stop and some had to fish only one line.  Slowed down for a bit until they caught a good sized pike.  Should be the same today as the pressure is low and steady.

February 15, 2010

Fishing was pretty good yesterday morning.  Finally some pickerel caught, a ling, bass and perch.  Really good this morning.  Biting faster than you could keep up with them so think I may go out later this afternoon if I can.

February 14, 2010

Fish, namely perch, were biting pretty steadily all day yesterday.  Slowed down in the mid-afternoon and I finally caught my yearly pike.  Was just a small 2-footer but I gave it to the Lester group as most of them had never tried pike before.  There were also a couple of small mouth bass caught yesterday.  What's up with the bass lately?  Haven't heard how they're doing out there today as yet but no pickerel this weekend so far.

February 12, 2010

Dan and I went fishing in the late afternoon and although the pressure was up, we did ok.  We had a "mini" fishing derby between the two of us and Dan won.  Good thing or I wouldn't have heard the end of it.   There was something huge hanging around so the fishing was on and off and we didn't catch whatever it was.  Pressure falling today so fishing should be good tonight and hopefully tomorrow.

February 11, 2010

I went fishing by myself for a few hours yesterday and although the pressure was on the rise, I did pretty good.  Did the catch and release thing.  I caught any amount of perch, of course, but surprised myself by getting a nice size bass.  Fist time I've caught a winter bass.  Also a couple of herring.  They're fun to catch.  I had a line up off the bottom about 15 feet just to see but only caught a couple of perch off it.  They're everywhere!!  And that wasn't where I caught the herring.  Normally the herring are up, not a foot off the bottom.  If you're not fussy about what you want to catch and are just happy catching lots of fish, our hole has been producing well all season.

February 8, 2010

No one went fishing yesterday although Matthew Ward's group could have.  Finally had a chance to read Saturday's paper and there was an article in the Nugget regarding the fishing this winter on Lake Nipissing.  To view, click on the link below.  If you can't get it, go into nugget.ca under February 5th's paper, local news to view.  The article is entitled "Something's Fishy on Nipissing".  Pretty interesting.

February 7, 2010

Pressure was falling yesterday so fishing was excellent.  Non-stop action, couldn't keep up with two lines.  Everyone's happy, everyone's well fed.

February 6, 2010

Fishing was good yesterday.  Just steady all day until around 3:00.  Of course it was, that's when Dan and I went out to dip a line.  We caught lots of perch but didn't keep anything.  Dan told me between runs this morning that Ted Childs group caught a nice pickerel (18") but had to let it go.  Haven't heard if they've caught anymore.  Fishing is good again this morning and the pressure is dropping.  It's also overcast vs. sunny like yesterday, which helps.

February 5, 2010

Word is the pickerel fishing was really good on Lake Nipissing this week.  Of course it was, we didn't have anyone in for a change.  Also, heard that the natives are fishing higher up than usual this year.  The smelt is running in shallower water so the pickerel are following.  If I fish today, I'm going to put my line up and see what happens.  The fish are biting this morning so hope it holds for the weekend.

February 2, 2010

We won't have anyone fishing until later in the week but Robin Genzler's group wanted me to update their "big catches".  The pike caught was 9 lb., 32 3/4 inches, the pickerel was 8 lbs.  Sorry, didn't get the measurements.  I've added pictures of both of them to our website.  Look on the main ice fishing page, right hand margin.  Hopefully a few more of those'll be caught this weekend.  Also, we have some information passed to us via the MNR.  Apparently there are large pockets of smelt in Lake Nipissing and the pickerel have been following them. Therefore, pickerel are not where they should be and places where they shouldn't.  Don't know if this is fact, just what we were told.

February 1, 2010

Another successful weekend at Greening Bay Cottages.  Lake Nipissing gave up enough bounty for everyone to have a fish fry.  The fellas in cottage #3 had a mini-tournament and it's hard to say who actually got the bigger fish.  The hog walleye had considerable more girth than the huge pike, but the pike was longer.  The guys that went "touring" around our bay with the people mover got the pike.  The pickerel was caught at the huts.  I fished for a couple of hours in the afternoon but did catch and release as I got 20-something perch.  Had a couple of pickerel bites but didn't get any.  I do have pictures of the two large fish and will post them on the site sometime this week.

January 31, 2010

UPDATE:  Too funny.  The guys that insisted on fishing elsewhere (by the island) should have stayed put.  The hut they were in landed a hog this morning.  They figure she's a good 7 lb'er so they'll have a nice feed of pickerel tonight.  Dan's going to try to get a picture.

The fishing held even during the cold front but no pickerel to speak of.  Lots of perch and pike.  Dan took a group out by Greening Bay Island for the day to try there.  It's on a shelf that goes from 9 to 21 feet.  Going to see what the hey.  I'm going to try in shallower water as well today (I think).

January 30, 2010

Fishing was good yesterday although I figured it wouldn't be.  Pressure is dropping today so should be even better.  One group caught as soon as they dropped their line and said, "I've already caught more here than last year at another place".  Always nice to hear that.  No pickies again yesterday though.  Pike.  We sure are getting our share this year.

January 26, 2010

Our guests were going for perch yesterday and did manage to get a nice bucket full.  Also caught a nice 4 lb. pike.  They lost a huge walleye right at the hole.  Nearly had it on the floor but it was too quick for them.  Fishing's been really good, just hope it holds for the weekend.

January 25, 2010

Pressure was dropping steadily yesterday so the morning fish was pretty good.  No one fished in the afternoon.  However, today the pressure is really low and continuing to drop so I'm going out on a limb and saying the fishing will be good for our guys today.  They are going for perch so should be some happy campers.

January 24, 2010

We have definitely been going through lots of bait this season.  Lots of fish caught again yesterday.  Lots of perch a couple of nice pike (3 and 4 lb'ers).  No pickies though.  Regardless of what people may think, we do have a good pickerel fishery on Lake Nipissing it's just finding and catching the little suckers :o)

January 23, 2010

Fishing was steady all day yesterday until around 2:00.  Picked up again around 3:00 and then got really quiet until the Avery group caught a 2 lb., 26 inch pike.  Pressure staying steady for the time being so fishing should be fairly good today.

January 22, 2010

Well now I'm completely confused.  Fishing was actually really good late yesterday afternoon.  Perch were biting and I kept 7 really good size ones (10 inchers).  Missed a couple of pickies, one at the hole and one half way up.  The pressure was high but there was a fairly good current happening which may explain why they were biting.  It's high pressure today and rising so don't know how the morning fish will be.

January 21, 2010

Wasn't the greatest day for fishing but everyone caught something.  High pressure but today it's steady so may be better although no one's going out.  Had a mini fishing derby yesterday afternoon from 3:00-5:30 and whoever caught the biggest fish won.  It was Stephan who caught a 2' ling.  No one wanted to keep it so I put it back down the hole.  Fish were really biting when we first started fishing and then died off around 4:30 so we all figured someone would catch a pike but that didn't happen.  There are a lot of 2 foot pike and ling this year which makes for good eating and easy cleaning.

January 20, 2010

Fellas caught quite a bit of fish yesterday morning but came in around 1:00 and didn't go back out.  They had quite a bit of cleaning to do.  Won't know if they're fishing this morning for a bit, no one was up when I left the house.

January 19, 2010

Fishing was extremely slow on Sunday.  I only caught 3 perch and really had to work at getting them.  After the feeding frenzy earlier in the week, they just weren't hungry.  However, they nailed them yesterday.  Fishing is also good this morning from what I hear.

January 17, 2010

Most of the pickerel was caught outside the huts yesterday as the pressure was rising all day.  Fishing was slower than normal and even so, everyone caught.  The Miller group alone told us they cleaned 100 fish last night.  Quite a few 2 foot pike, some wally's, lots of perch.  Pressure falling today so should steadily pick up.

January 16, 2010

Lake Nipissing sure is giving up her bounty this winter.  The fishing's been really good.  Yesterday our American guests were really nailing the fish throughout most of the day.  Caught a mixture of everything.  Missed a beautiful pickerel right at the hole and were a little peeved.  However, right around 3:00, everyone said the fishing just died.  Couldn't figure that one out until another group got on shore last night and told us their lines were all tangled.  Pike.  That's explains lots.

January 15, 2010

I managed to get out fishing for a couple of hours yesterday afternoon.  Couldn't keep up with my two lines.  Was nuts!!  Caught a couple of slot-line pickerel between 4:30-5:00 and they were very hard to get.  Had to be patient and stay on the line.  Dan said you should try silver swedish pimples as some of our guys had luck with them this week.

January 14, 2010

My God fishing is good this year.  Everyone who's been here so far have gotten a mixed pail of fish, enough for a really, really good fry and able to take some home.  If we went strictly for the pickerel fishing, you'd have nothing to do between the morning and evening runs but our hole is keeping everyone busy and hopping.  Yesterday afternoon, Curly and the Strathroy boys just nailed the fish.  I've never seen anyone so excited when they've come off the ice.  Lots of perch, got some slot line pickerel as well as some keepers.  Got a nice wally just under the far end of the slot.  It's between the fronts and the pressure that things slow down but not so much you don't get enough for a fry.  Curly said he couldn't even drink his beer 'cause he was too busy trying to keep up with his lines.  Looks like it'll stay this way throughout the weekend as the jet stream's above us and the pressure low.  I'm really going to try my best to get out there later this afternoon but it'll depend on if I get everything done.

January 12, 2010

Boys didn't get here until noon yesterday so missed the morning fish.  Caught lots of perch, enough for a fry.  We're definitely catching fish.  Didn't hear how they did this morning and have another group coming in this afternoon so hopefully more to report tomorrow.  I'm not fishing this week, too busy.

January 11, 2010

Fishing wasn't overly great yesterday.  Guys got some pickerel and perch in the morning and perch throughout the day.  I went out around 3.  Was really slow, not even many nibbles so decided to roll up the line a couple of times and got a pickerel right away but that was about it.  Went from very cold to much warmer temps, windy and with the pressure rising so figured as much.  Going to even out throughout the week so see what it brings to our guys today.

January 10, 2010

Fishing on a whole has been pretty good this weekend.  Pickerel, lots of perch, at least 4 pike that we know of and a ling were caught.  Everyone was able to have a really decent fish fry and most are taking fish home.  Pickerel run came on late last night (around 5:45) but they were definitely there.  As well as this morning although as I stated, they're hard to land this year.  With the warm weather coming in this week, maybe I'll be able to get my limit.

January 9, 2010

The fishing was pretty good yesterday morning.  Caught some pickerel and of course perch but it started to die off around mid-afternoon.  Cold front came through bringing high pressure but the fish are still there.  One gentleman had his fishcam down the hole and saw the pickerel just bumping the minnows but not taking them.  It's been tough getting them to bite this year (so far).  Need some mild weather with low pressure to come in which it's suppose to in the next couple of days.  No word on this morning's fish but not expecting great things.

January 8, 2010

Our fishermen did pretty well yesterday.  Got a pail full of a mixture of fish for sure.  Some pickerel, perch, and a large ling.  It was bigger than the one I caught and although they didn't measure it, I figure it was a good 6 lbs.  They also lost what they figured to be a 12 lb. pike at the hole.  Couldn't get it through.  Something huge was on my line yesterday as well.  I had it on but lost it as I was pulling it up.  It actually broke my 12 pound test line and took the hook.  I didn't get any pickerel.  I don't know if I've lost my touch or what this year.  I'm having a really hard time landing them.  They're there, just not taking the hook like normal.   I only needed a couple of good size perch to complete my fry last night anyhow, which of course I got.  We heard a local lady landed a 20 lb. pike and everyone is wondering how on earth she got it through the hole....

January 7, 2010

Dan called from the ice this morning.  The guys hadn't even finished setting up yet and caught a beauty pickerel but unfortunately, it was in the slot.  Missed a big one also.  Haven't heard anything else but think I'm going to head out there around 3:00 and see what the hey.

January 6, 2010

Went fishing for a couple of hours yesterday afternoon.  Did the catch and release thing except for 3 perch (all really good size) which were too injured to go back down the hole.  Must have caught 25 of them though.  Caught a couple of keeper pickerel but they are really biting light again this year.  Just sucking on the minnow and you really have to work at catching them.  Missed several.  I actually picked up my rod to jig and there was a big one on.  It took my hook.

January 4, 2010

We didn't fish yesterday as it was just too cold with miserable conditions.  I did talk to some other people and apparently the pickerel were on in the afternoon.  When I checked the pressure this morning, it has stablized so that is likely what's been affecting them.  Cold temps, miserable conditions, rising pressure and full moon.  What does one expect?  They're hungry now.  Don't know if we'll fish again until Wednesday but will keep updating if I get any info.

January 3, 2010

Spoke to a couple of other resorts yesterday to see what the hey.  We are all fishing in the same depth of water - approximately 30 feet and all catching the same thing.  Perch, good size, pickerel, and ling.  Some whitefish and pike.  Dan and I went out around 3:00 yesterday and the action was non-stop with the perch to the point we had to fish with one line each - couldn't keep up with two.  I had just caught a newbie pickerel, which was the silver colour, when all of a sudden, it just died off.  We sat there for a good 20 minutes and Dan just finished saying "there has to be a predator around here" when his line went down huge.  He pulled up a 3.5 lb., 24 inch pike.  The fishing never did pick up very well again after that likely because there was another pike in the vicinity, which is usually the case as they tend to travel in pairs.

January 2, 2010

Dan went out around 9:00 yesterday morning and caught around 40 perch.  Missed the morning pickerel run.  I went out around 1:00 in the afternoon.  Caught a slew of perch, and they are a good size this year.  Around 2:00 in the afternoon I caught my first pickerel of the season.  It was a keeper, just under the slot and very black and gold.  First time in a long time I've caught one that colour (usually they are more silver), which means (so I'm told) they're coming from deep water.  Caught several more good size perch and released most of them as I didn't want to clean them.  Just needed enough fish for Dan and I for supper.  Well, just as the evening pickerel run started, I caught a 4.5 lb., 26.5 inch ling.  First time I've ever caught one and did it fight!!  Completely screwed up both my lines and by the time I got re-organized, the run was over.  That's ok, I was happy with my catch yesterday.  Not only did I catch the ling, but it had a traveller with it.  There was a sucker, which looked like an eel attached to it.  The thing detached itself as soon as the ling hit air.  Was squirming around on the floor of the hut until I kicked it down the hole.  Pretty cool.  Going to talk to some of the neighbours today to see how they did as I'm not sure I'm fishing today.  Pretty cold and windy.  From the looks of things, the fishing's going to be good this year.

October 15, 2009

Lake Nipissing pretty much closes down for the season as of today.  Season, spring, through fall, was a very successful one.  Here's hoping the ice fishing is just as good, if not better.

September 20, 2009

Fishing is excellent on Lake Nipissing right now.  Dan took Andy and I fishing and it wasn't even during peak times and we did great.  Caught 3 sheephead, 2 small mouth bass and eight pickerel.  We would have caught our limit if we had stayed out another hour as we were just starting to hit peak evening when we came in.  Needless to say, we had pickerel for supper last night.

September 16, 2009

Dan took 4 men fishing yesterday for their tournament and they all had their pickerel limits in half and hour.  Caught in 24 feet of water just the other side of "Whiskey" Island.  Dan's wasn't the only boat catching like that either.  Never seen anything like it this time of year.  Said they were practically  jumping in his boat.  I'll have to see if I can get out sometime this week.

September 15, 2009

From what we're hearing, the pickerel are being caught in 24 feet of water, any quantity.  Means they're starting to move in.  This cold front may affect the fishing but it's coming in slowly.  Dan is taking some guys out this morning for a fishing tournament so we'll see how they do.

September 14, 2009

Fishing still excellent.  There is a "walleye' chop happening today on Lake Nipissing so today's the day to catch lots.  Jack tells me the Anderson group caught 43 pickerel, 15 perch, 6 small mouth bass and a couple of good sized sheephead during their stay.  I'd say that makes for a pretty good feed and still lets them take some home to enjoy at a later date.

September 13, 2009

Fishing was absolutely phenomenal yesterday.  Mike, Reta and I caught 18+ pickerel between 9 and 1:00.  Kept our limit and Mike landed a 7 lb'er over 27 inches long.  We were in 34 to 36 feet of water out five miles from shore with chartreuse jigs and worms.  Our guests that had their own tournament didn't do well in the morning but went where we suggested in the evening and nailed the fish as well.  Was a great day fishing for everyone.

September 12, 2009

Fishing's been good but they are definitely starting to move in to shallower water.  You can just tell by where all the boats are situated on Lake Nipissing.  Some of our guests are having a fishing tournament today so will update the results tomorrow.

September 10, 2009

The pickerel are biting really good right now.  John finally caught a hog yesterday.  They were fishing with leeches and pretty much got their limit.  John got most of them but they were hitting really good yesterday on the whole.  The Anderson boat was fishing in shallower water than most of the other boats on Lake Nipissing and did really well.  Think they are starting to come in to feed as the night time temps have been pretty cold.

September 9, 2009

Went fishing with Ponch, Kathy and John last night.  Tried a new spot much closer to shore last night.  We managed to catch 7 pickerel between us in a short period of time as well as a small mouth bass and a few perch.  That wasn't even the honey spot so tells me fishing is definitely back on after the full moon we had on the weekend.

September 8, 2009

Fishing is back on although the pickerel are being caught in deeper than normal water right now.

September 6, 2009

Went fishing yesterday morning.  Tried our usual haunt but couldn't anchor, too rough.  People that did fish there did alright.  We moved to the red buoy and were marking tons of fish but they just weren't biting.  Only caught a couple all weekend.  Keep in mind, it's a full moon.  They haven't started moving into Greening Bay just yet but should pretty soon.

August 30, 2009

Sorry, nothing to report at this time.  Weather been cold, rainy and windy, not many fishing.

August 26, 2009

Blow day.

August 25, 2009

By the look of Lake Nipissing, going to be a blow day today.

August 25, 2009

Fishing's excellent.

August 22, 2009

Fishing slow down just a tad but think that's due to the Lake Nipissing water spouts stirring things and likely scattering the schools.  Lake is calm today  so things should pretty much be back to normal.

August 20, 2009

Fishing excellent!!  Pickerel/walleye being caught in 25 feet of water still with jigs and worms.  Bass is shallower in about 18-20 feet of water, caught with same.

August 18, 2009

Went out fishing first thing in the morning with Mike and Reta but we couldn't anchor.  Went to "our spot" but it was way to rough so decided to try just beside our little island where it was protected from the wind.  We were marking lots of fish but nothing was biting.  They are definitely still biting in 35 feet of water.

August 17, 2009

Fishing back on and how.  Mike and Carol, from our trailer park, caught a 7.5 lb. and 6 lb. pickerel on Saturday and Sunday evening, Frank said he must have caught 20 walleye - had to throw alot back due to slot size but came in when he had his limit.  Hoping to get out there myself today but will see.

August 15, 2009

Fishing ok but think they are now moving but not quite sure where.  Catching in the usual spots but not as many.  This warm front may be affecting their hunger.

August 11, 2009

Fish not as active yesterday apparently.  Weren't biting as well as usual but it was sunny all day yesterday so that might have something to do with it.

August 10, 2009

We fished in about 35 feet of water yesterday morning and got our limits.  Lots of bass also but the pickerel were biting huge.  Some perch but mostly walleye.  Catching with worms and jigs just off the bottom.  Several spots around but we were out by the bumble bee buoy.

August 9, 2009

Fishing's been excellent if you know where to go.  Five miles out just NW of bumble bee buoy.  First thing in the morning and right before dusk.

August 2, 2009

Fishing's been great about 5 miles out from us right on the structure that goes from 40 to 27 feet of water.  Limiting out.

July 29, 2009

Dan, Disco, Lenny and I all went out yesterday morning and the boys caught a ton of perch, couple of really big sheepheads and Dan lost a wonderful pickerel right at the boat.  I caught a couple of perch and that was about it - at least I didn't get skunked.  We should have been in shallower water but there were too many boats where we were - they were catching some nice ones.  Didn't matter, it was just great to be out first thing in the morning getting warmed up by the sun.  Yes, we did have sun!!  Fish are definitely biting.

July 28, 2009

Dan took Disco (Dougall) and I fishing yesterday morning.  First time I've been skunked.  Disco caught a nice sized bass and a beautiful over slot-line pickerel which is currently in my fridge cleaned and ready to be eaten - tonight.  Dan caught a perch and a bass also.  We didn't get out early enough but may try again this morning in a different spot and much earlier.

July 23, 2009

The Miller group and our neighbours are doing pretty good fishing right now.  Better in the morning than the evenings from what I'm hearing but I guess it all depends on where one is fishing.  Perch and pickerel in 40 feet or thereabouts.

July 22, 2009

Fishing is excellent again if you know where to go.  Mike and Reta went out yesterday morning and limited out.  Brought home the limit even after having to release a couple of slot line.  Catching in anywhere from 37 to 42 feet of water.  Should have seen the big fish we were marking at the French River yesterday.  Didn't have the right equipment or I wouldn't have minded dropping a line.

July 21, 2009

Although Dan and I fished with Mike and Reta yesterday afternoon, fish were still caught (wrong time of the day to fish).  Mike got a nice pickerel had to go back and a keeper.  Lots were biting and I must have missed 4 or 5.  Biting in about 37 feet of water first thing in the morning.  Also catching same deal during the evenings.

July 19, 2009

By the time all the fishermen showed up yesterday for check-in, the wind had picked up so another blow day.  Still blowing pretty good this morning but suppose to calm down on Lake Nipissing.  They have been catching a few by the bumble bee buoy but it's pretty slow due to the turbulence of the water.  Will take a day or two to calm.

July 14, 2009

Been blowing for days on Lake Nipissing.  No one's been able to get out fishing.

July 10, 2009

Pickerel are now biting in very deep water.  Shallows producing some bass and perch.  Shads nearly finished so things should pick up shortly.  Lots being caught out past the bumble bee buoy.

July 9, 2009

Sorry, haven't been out fishing nor spoken to anyone that has.  Will try to get some info today.

July 7, 2009

I'm being told the fishing is starting to drop off due to the shad flies being in.  They aren't bad around here but are certainly thick around North Bay.  Another few days it'll pick up again.

July 6, 2009

Still catching the odd pickerel in Greening Bay but the fishing is best in deeper water now.  Bumble Bee buoy or Callander Bay.

July 2, 2009

Catching out at the bumble bee buoy during the morning, early afternoon hours.  Catching some in Greening Bay but deeper until just before the sun goes down.

July 1, 2009

Fishing was excellent for pretty much everyone yesterday.  One group caught a pail full of pickerel and one was 28 inches.  Nice fish!!  They are moving into deeper water but both the morning and evening fishing has been great.

June 30, 2009

Lake Nipissing is giving up her bounty once again for the bass season which just opened.  Catching bass in our bay or further out past the island.  Pickerel slowing down a tad and in a bit deeper water than 7 feet now as Greening Bay has warmed up.  Still lots of fish to be caught, just need to go deeper.

June 28, 2009

Fishing was ok last night.  Dan caught 4, count'em, 4 sheephead.  I caught 2.  What's up with all the sheephead in Greening Bay?  We've never had that before.  Then again, we've never seen a Sturgeon caught in Greening Bay either.  Pickerel are still there but they were biting really light last night.

June 27, 2009

UPDATE:  I stand corrected.  Just because I didn't do well fishing last night (and I have my theory about that) everyone else did fantastic.  Mike and the boys caught 22 pickerel between the 3 of them - kept two good sized ones.  Our other fishermen all did really well and most caught their limits.

Fishing's been awesome all week but last night not so good.  Chad flies came on and the cold front came through with rain which affected the water temps and the air pressure on Lake Nipissing.  I went fishing and caught a friggin' sheephead, which was fun but definitely not what I was after.  Started raining pretty good right at prime time so we didn't stay out.  I like to fish but I'm not that fanatical.

June 24, 2009

I kayak'd out to the boats in Greening Bay last night and everyone had their limit.  Mike, Daniel and Matt got their last one as I was beside their boat so they pulled anchor and headed in.  Everyone else, even though they had their limits stayed out longer so what's up with that?  Hhhhmmmm.  There are reports of chad flies coming on in North Bay but we haven't seen any.  Hopefully they won't come on strong and the fishing will stick around for another week or so.

June 23, 2009

Didn't get a chance to talk to anyone last night but by the looks of the guts in the fish cleaning station this morning, there were plenty of fish caught again last yesterday/last night.  Lots of boats out there last night again but all off Lake Nipissing by late dusk - which generally means everyone caught their limit during the evening run.

June 23, 2009

What can I say?  Fishing's on in Greening Bay and everyone did well again last night.

June 22, 2009

Not as many boats on Lake Nipissing last night as alot of the fishermen had gone home after a great weekend.  Everyone I talked to that fished in Greening Bay last night limited out.  There was a bit of a "walleye" chop though so that likely helped.  We didn't go, maybe tonight.

June 21, 2009

Fishing bang on again yesterday.  Same group that caught the sturgeon yesterday landed a 6.3, 27 inch pickerel in the afternoon not far from Greening Bay.  Dan took me out fishing last night (he didn't fish but baited and netted for me) and I caught 3 pickerel, one of which I let go because it was pretty small and a good sized perch.  Mike and Reta caught 10 total pickerel in their boat, kept their limits.

June 20, 2009

Unbelievable!!  One of our fisherman landed a 3 foot, 25+ lb. sturgeon in Greening Bay last night in about 7 feet of water.  We were fishing right beside them and it took him a good 20 minutes to bring in it.  Great photo op before he released it.  I still have to get particulars as I'm sending it in to the Nugget but he's currently out fishing this morning.  Saw the pictures of it last night.  What a great catch!!  We did pretty well ourselves as far as pickerel go.  Reta limited out, I caught two and missed one right at the boat and a couple more that I had on the line for a bit.  Dan just basically baited our hooks and netted for the two girls.  Also got a sheephead and couple of perch.  Fishing is right on right now...

June 19, 2009

When all was said and done last night there were 20 boats in our bay.  Everyone was catching but apparently not as well as the night before.  Could have something to do with the amount of people fishing in our bay...

June 18, 2009

Pretty much everyone we talked to limited out in half hour last night.  Soon as the pickerel started biting, they were pulling the walleye in as fast as they could.  Definitely a slow start this year due to high water levels on Lake Nipissing, which have receded, as well as a late spawn and colder water temps but the fishing is great right now in Greening Bay.  Seven feet of water with worms and chartreuse coloured jigs.

June 16, 2009

Really catching the pickerel and perch in Greening Bay now.  Season was slow getting started but it's definitely on.  Lake Nipissing giving up her bounty.

June 15, 2009

Fishing excellent yesterday.

June 14, 2009

Went fishing last night for an hour or so and our boat caught 2 keeper pickerel, 2 sheepheads and 2 bass.  Ken Adams group went down to Callander Bay last night and they all got a couple of pickerel each.  We're hearing the fish are being nailed at La Vase, at least that's the rumour.

June 11, 2009

Our fishermen are doing excellent with the pickerel.  Catching lots, mostly keepers.  Went to the red buoy yesterday afternoon and did ok but went into deeper water today and did really well.  Fishing's been quite good all around.

June 10, 2009

Fishing was good again last night.  Catching perch and any sized walleye.  The pickerel just under the slot are coming into Greening Bay and those are the fish that weren't biting during ice fishing this year.  Lots of keepers but also over the slot.  I personally think the shad flies will be late this year because of the cooler water temps and all the rain but we'll see.

June 8, 2009

Haven't spoken to anyone yet this morning but there were 14 boats in Greening Bay last night so the fishing much still be good.  Lake Nipissing is pretty good all over from what I'm hearing.

June 7, 2009

What more can I say?  There were 19 boats fishing in Greening Bay last night and everyone we talked to absolutely nailed the fish.  Everything from pickerel, perch and whitefish to sheepshead.  Fish are definitely on where we are!!

June 5, 2009

Fishing was prett good last night.  I actually got out with Mike and Reta and was the only one to catch.  Released  a nice slot line caught with my little $12 Walmart special while Mike's line was broken by a biggie that got away with his $100 job.  Lots of big ones being caught around us but keepers as well.  Still in about 10 feet but moving in to 5-6 feet as the night progresses.

June 4, 2009

Lake Nipissing has been fairly calm for the past couple of days so the fish are back on in Greening Bay in the evening hours.  Still 10 feet of water.  Hitting on both minnows and worms still.

June 2, 2009

I have to say the weather really hasn't cooperated with the fishermen too much since opening weekend.  They were finally able to get out last night for the evening fish but it wasn't that great due to Lake Nipissing being stirred up so much the previous couple of days.  The one group caught perch, another group a sheephead, good size bass (not in season) and a keeper pickerel.  Maybe today will bring better luck as the lake's been comparably pretty settled.

June 1, 2009

One of our cottages braved the elements last night and went out fishing for the evening.  Haven't anything to report just yet as they aren't up but will let you know when I hear.

May 31, 2009

Nothing to report - blow day today

May 30, 2009

What more can I say?  Fish are on in Greening Bay in the evening.  This morning, Paul MacDermott and Jim Brenner both caught a 5.5 lb. pickerel at the red buoy.  Two inches over the slot...that's where Mike, Reta, Daniel and Matt are headed to fish today so we'll see how they do...

May 28, 2009

Sorry, can't report just yet today.  Didn't see any of the fishermen last night when they came off the lake and no one is up yet this morning.  Will update a bit later.  I did however talk to some fishermen trolling our creek (Moose Creek) who caught some bass (thrown back, not in season) and good size pike.

May 27, 2009

Roger Bradshaw's group caught a big'un just under the far end of the slot last night within a couple of casts.  All the rest they caught were keepers as well as a couple of perch.  Haven't heard of too many perch being caught yet so the water temps on Lake Nipissing have to be getting close to normal if the perch have started coming in.  The fishing is definitely on in Greening Bay and from the looks of the forecast (not warming quickly), will be on for several weeks.  Catching with worms and jigs in 10 to 12 feet of water.

May 26, 2009

Fishing is coming on strong in Greening Bay.  Everyone's catching in the evening and alot of them are keepers (for the pickerel).  Not too many perch being caught though yet.

May 24, 2009

Lake Nipissing gave up her bounty on the fishing scene last night although the general concensus is it's still a little slow.  Need another week of warm weather.  You can't please fishermen sometimes though, especially the "meat" fishermen who want to catch their limits in 5 minutes.  Again, that's why it's called "fishing" and not "catching".  It's coming and there are lots of pickerel being caught just under the limit which were lacking during the ice fishing.  Still in anywhere from 5 to 12 feet of water in Greening Bay with worms and chartreuse coloured jigs.

May 23, 2009

Fish are definitely on in our bay although not super hungry just yet (spawn still on).  I missed 4 good ones and lost my bait for the effort.  The one pickerel I did catch, lost right at the boat as we forgot our net but it was slot line anyhow.  Dan caught a keeper as well as a nice size catfish which he cut the line and set free.  We weren't prepared to catch one of those puppies either and Dan wasn't going anywhere near the barbs.  Guess if we go out again this evening, we'll be better equipped this time.  Craig and Ginny Baker were fishing next to us and Craiger caught a nice size in the slot, which he released but also kept a good one.  Another week and the fish'll be back on as normal.  Water still pretty cold for them and they aren't really hungry until after the spawn.

May 22, 2009

Haven't spoken to anyone yet this morning but in a couple of discussions yesterday afternoon, the general concensus is it's a tad early yet.  Spawn still isn't over and the water is below normal temps.  Pickerel, perch and pike are being caught but mostly on minnows.  Rule of thumb on this lake, cold water=minnow, warmer water=worms.

May 21, 2009

Lots of boats fishing in our bay again last night.  Either fishing on the shoal where it drops from 5 feet to 12 feet or right off the point.  Catching some fish (pickerel, perch and some pike) right at dusk.  Our fishermen aren't avid and haven't been fishing alot but they did go out last night and got quite a few pickerel, all keepers just below the slot.  Finally the 14-15 inchers are back.  Fishing should be good in our bay now for the next 3 weeks or so.

May 20, 2009

Sorry, can't report anything this morning as our fishermen didn't go out last night (rain) and I don't see any movement this morning either (rain).  Hopefully they'll get out later today and I can report on the fishing status tomorrow.

May 19, 2009

Lots on boats in our bay last night but haven't talked to anyone to see how the fish were biting.  Will find out later today.  Andrew's group caught a 5.2 pound bass in our bay yesterday.  Too bad they aren't in season yet.  That would have been a nice fish to keep.

May 18, 2009

Honestly, the guys really had a tough time getting out yesterday.  Rough waters prevailed.  That said, and believe it or not, they caught good size bass in our creek (not yet in season) which usually produces perch.  God bless 'em, they went out first thing this morning because it's finally calm enough to get on Lake Nipissing so here's hoping they get some eating fish.

May 17, 2009

Fish are on!!  Catching with minnows and/or worms in about 8 to 10 feet of water.  Lots of slot size but keepers over and under as far as pickerel/walleye are concerned.  Also
