February 5, 2012
For the most part, our fishermen pretty happy. Everyone caught yesterday, again a variety and some of size. Pike, perch, pickerel, whitefish, herring. Quite a few of our guests fished outside as it was perfect conditions for it yesterday. Today is going to be quite mild but pressure is high and rising. I'm fishing this afternoon (hopefully) so we'll see how it goes. I will say, the fishing over the past few days has been dropping off around 2:00 and then picking up again just in time for the pickerel run.
February 4, 2012
Fishing was fantastic yesterday. Lots of variety and lots of fish caught. Alot of people fishing outside and we've found the fish are starting to move a tad so Dan thinks he's going to move a hut or two today. They haven't moved much, but fresh holes tend to do better anyhow. Problem is finding the banking as not much snow on the ice right now and nothing in the forecast. Still, it's going to be nice enough today to fish outside regardless.
February 3, 2012
Fishing was good yesterday although a little slow between 11 to 2, which is normal. Have a gentleman here from Dubai who has never ice fished before and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our guests came home with a pail full of perch and walleye so no complaints. Didn't get any "monsters" to speak of but plenty happy with what was caught. Have conflicting pressure reports today but think there'll be a good run of fish today. Tonight may be a different story as the cold front is suppose to come through.
February 2, 2012
Fishing was slow in the morning as the high pressure system moved through. No one fished in the afternoon but likely the same. High pressure again today so may need a day or two for it to stablize before the fishing picks up. Still catching, just not as well as previously.
February 1, 2012
Fishing was pretty good yesterday. Our guests had a nice pail of fish, enough for a really good fry. They caught a small pike and nice sized ling as well as some perch and pickerel. I went out for the evening run and caught 7 pickerel, only kept one as the others were pretty small. First fish I got was the biggest perch I've ever caught on this lake so I did keep it. Of course it was full of roe but hey, I usually let them go. Pressure is currently fairly low but on the rise. Another weather system coming through today and then it should even out for the weekend.
January 31, 2012
Fishing wasn't bad yesterday considering the pressure was fairly high. Dropping today so should be even better. Our guests were having a hard time landing the fish as they were biting so light but Dan went out in the later afternoon and managed to get 3 walleye and a bunch of perch. Was helping roll up one of our guests lines and there was a pickerel on it. Albeit a small one but still. Gotta pay attention to the lines if you want to catch fish!!
January 29, 2012
Went fishing yesterday afternoon and did alright. Guests had caught and released a good sized ling and pike by the time I'd gotten out and fishing. Was slow for me until the walleye run came on about 5:00. Caught 5, let one little one go, kept 4 for supper last night so was happy. Guests had a decent fry so there ya go. Can't ask for more than that!!
January 28, 2012
Fishing good again yesterday. Lots of big perch and pickerel of some size caught. Lots of little wallys released. Small pike. No really large fish but sometimes quantity is better than quality. Fishing should be good today as well. Pressure was on the rise last night right at dusk but is low again this morning and falling.
January 27, 2012
Fishing was excellent yesterday. Our guests all limited out on the pickerel and only kept the good eaters as they let the little ones go. Caught a lot of nice sized perch as well. Good feed for them, for sure. Fishing should be as good, if not better today as well. Pressure very low and falling. Full house today so we'll see how everyone does. Have to be on them and paying attention to your lines to catch them though.
January 23, 2012
Fishing wasn't as slow as originally indicated. Guess it all depends on who you speak with. Fishing was actually pretty good after 1:00 yesterday and has picked up somewhat. With the major low pressure system coming through this week and the weather actually staying mild and steady, fishing should be great.
January 22, 2012
Fishing slow again yesterday. Some perch, pickerel and a large pike were caught but was pretty quiet. Pressure still high and now rising but hopefully things have picked up a bit for today. I'm hearing everything is hit and miss on most of the lake right now. Once this storm system moves through, things are suppose to level out for the duration of the week so things should improve.
January 21, 2012
Fishing wasn't too bad in the morning but was very quiet in the mid-afternoon to evening. The pressure was extremely high and rising throughout the day. I actually went out for a bit and never saw it as slow. Only caught one good sized perch, which I let go. Didn't even stick around for the evening run, which was a good thing as there wasn't one to speak of. Hopefully the fishing will be much better today.
January 20, 2012
Surprisingly enough, fishing was quite good yesterday. Our guests caught a considerable amount of fish including a nice sized ling, good sized perch and pickerel. Don't think the fishing will be as good this morning due to the cold front that came through but I think it'll be pretty good for the evening run.
January 19, 2012
Fishing slowed a tad yesterday but pickies still caught in the evening run although all small ones. Just under-the-slot are pretty finicky this year and hard to get. Can't begin to count how many I've missed. Still, lots of fish there to keep everyone busy.
January 18, 2012
Fishing for our guests yesterday afternoon was just excellent. Caught a ton of jumbo perch and the walleye run hit so they did pretty good then as well. Likely could have gotten a few more but Dan pulled them off a tad early as the weather got really bad. Hopefully they'll do as well today.
January 16, 2012
Too funny. The Miller group declared one of the huts they were in "dead" so Dan opened a different one for them and said I would go out and catch my limit in the dead hut. They didn't believe him. I didn't get my limit but I did get 3 keepers and about a 5 lb. pike. The pike cut me pretty bad - it bit me while trying to get the hook out. At any rate, the fishing was pretty good yesterday.
January 15, 2012
The weather definitely affected the fishing yesterday. Was slower and tougher than the norm but people still caught. A few walleye caught in the morning and as well during the evening run but most of them were just small. Pressure is high but stable and hopefully will start to lower today as the warmer temps come in. Think it'll be tough until around mid-afternoon today.
January 14, 2012
The fishing slowed down a tad yesterday, I'm assuming due to the weather. The avid fishermen caught fish, some got their limits, but if you don't pay attention to your lines, you're not going to get anything. One of the gentlemen staying with us has a fish finder and said we're sitting on a huge bed of fish but they'd swim up to the bait, nudge it and move on. They just aren't hungry right now. They've likely been feeding non-stop through the full moon. Suppose to be sunny today and high pressure so that will also affect how the fishing goes.
January 13, 2012
Fishing still good yesterday but man are those pickies hard to get right now. I missed alot yesterday but still got my limit, didn't keep them all. Good size perch as well. I think there was a pike around as it got pretty quiet for awhile. The pressure is low this morning but on the rise with the cold weather coming through (even though it's a low pressure system). Weather is going to be up and down for the next week so we'll see what how that affects the fishing as we go.
January 12, 2012
Fishing still good yesterday. Our guests caught some nice pickerel and perch. I caught a walleye that managed to completely make a tangled mess out of my two tip-ups so called it a day as it wasn't a good one to begin with. Low coming through today and pressure is dropping, as are the temps so hopefully the fish will continue to bite. I've fished all but one of our huts and have to say, we're definitely in the right spot again this year.
January 11, 2012
Fishing good again yesterday. Our guests caught more than enough for a fry and I caught my limit but only brought home 2. As soon as I dropped my first line I caught a big herring, which is currently sitting on the ice for the ravens to eat. Gotta say though, the fish were tough to get yesterday. The walleye would hit the line hard but then take their time actually taking the bait. Same with the perch. Have to get right on your line as soon as you see it move or you're gong to miss them. I missed several. Again, hooked them briefly but they got off.
January 10, 2012
I didn't go but Dan called from the ice. Said he couldn't keep up with his two lines last night. Kept a few jumbo perch and a couple of just-under-the-slot walleye. Rest he released. We're in around 32' of water.
January 9, 2012
Went out yesterday afternoon and fishing was excellent. I caught my limit in walleye and also about 15 perch, 3 of which were a really good size so brought them home. I'm telling you though, the wallys are tough to get right now. Just hitting very light and if you're not right on the line, you miss them. I had several on for a few seconds before they got off. I also had a 10+ lb. something on last night and got it up to the hole but lost it. Still don't know what it was as I only saw it's belly (which was white) so could have been a hog, ling or pike. It broke the line and took my hook at any rate. I was surprised I got it up as far as the hole because I knew the line wasn't going to hold it. Full moon and all, fishing's good right now.
January 8, 2012
What can I say? Fishing was pretty darn good yesterday, both morning and evening. Pressure was on the rise during the evening fish but still did well. I suspect this morning's fish won't be as good due to the high pressure and full moon last night but we've been surprised before.
January 7, 2012
UPDATE: This fish are finally and most definitely on!! Everyone nailed the walleye this morning and as of 9:30, the perch arrived. Also, another 8-9 lb. ling caught. Don't know what's up with that this year but hey, if you like "freshwater lobster", they're there for the taking. Sorry Joe. Looks like you left a day early but hey, thanks alot for the light!!
The fish are finally starting to really come on. Perch came in yesterday although they're not quite as abundant just yet. Lots of pickerel caught. Another big one caught during the morning run by Greg Crook, weighing in at 8.9 lb. See "ice fishing" page for a picture. I went out in the afternoon and missed quite a few but managed to get one keeper. The walleye are biting light in our area and are full of minnows. Word is everyone is catching pretty good on the lake right now.
January 6, 2012
We're definitely in the right spot but we don't seem to be catching alot of fish where we are, just catching big fish!! Rob Hamilton caught a 15 lb. ling yesterday morning and had to use his gaff to get it out of the hole. I caught another 7 lb. ling first drop in the hole in the afternoon and then things got quiet but I still managed to get a couple of keeper walleye. Some walleye and a few perch caught. I'm wondering if anyone knows if ling are in the vacinity if it scares the other fish off?? There have been 3 ling caught in our fishing spot over the past few days, which really is unheard of. If anyone knows about this, please email me at greeningbay@yahoo.com Thanks for the input.
January 5, 2012
Fishing so-so yesterday. Had a ling and another 6 lb. walleye caught in the morning and more pickies caught in the evening run. Not many perch this year. Our spot usually produces an abundance of perch throughout the day but for some reason, not here this year. Doing some R&D today to see if we can find them. We're only 100 feet off our usual spot and can't get any closer to the massive pressure crack out by us. At least everyone venturing out on the lake is being cautious and not crossing the crack at this point.
January 4, 2012
Fishing was still pretty slow yesterday as the pressure still high and cold front started to move out. It's down today so hopefully things'll pick up. Don Strachan caught a beautiful 6.1 lb. pickerel around 9:30 in the a.m. - see picture on main page of "ice fishing". I caught a few keeper pickerel around 4:30 as did our guests. Also pike but only a couple of perch were caught all day. Don't know where they are but must be in the vicinity as pike are feeding off of something (hopefully not the walleye too much). Weather could have been affecting them also so see what today brings.
January 3, 2012
Don't know what possessed me to go out fishing in that terrible weather yesterday. Guess I was antsy to see how the fishing is this year. Needn't have bothered as it sucked yesterday afternoon. I had a feeling it wasn't going to be very good as the pressure wasn't stable and on the rise and with the high winds, find the fish usually stay quiet. I did catch a pike and a mud puppy for my efforts. Always catch at least one pike during ice fishing so hopefully that's the one for this year. Mud puppy was the first adult one I've ever caught and was visiting another hut when it got on the line so that's what I get for not paying attention. No one else caught anything yesterday afternoon either. Doubt fishing will be terribly good until later in the week just due to the weather conditions but I could be wrong.
January 2, 2012
As the pressure was changing yesterday, fishing was slow to non-existant until the walleye run hit around 4:00 p.m. Dan sat in the hut for most of the afternoon without a nibble and then right around 4, his fish finder started going off like crazy. He managed to get a 5 or 6 lb'er up to the hole before loosing it. Called me on shore when it happened and as he was talking to me, had another hit. He did bring home one just under the slot and said if I would have been out there, I would have caught my limit easily. Don't know what it'll be like today as the cold front is currently going through. The pressure went down overnight but is currently on the rise. Word from others on the lake is the fishing was tough in the afternoon for them also.
October 3, 2011
Sorry folks. Fishing pretty much over for us and guests. Won't reporting again until ice fishing starts. For those of you still fishing, good luck!!
September 11, 2011 - 7:14 a.m.
Fishing good for everyone last night. Cast from the deep into the shallows and drag to the boat. Preferably around 32 feet into 21 seems to be working quite nicely.
September 10, 2011 - 7:36 a.m.
Fish are definitely on but all I have to say is use minnows. This is the time of year they start getting finnicky. Jack went out in the afternoon and caught some minnows out front of our place and he just nailed the pickerel with them in the evening. We couldn't keep up with him. Good for him!!
September 9, 2011 - 7:33 a.m.
Fishing was good yesterday out by the red buoy. Dan caught 10 walleye but only kept 2. They were little ones he let go. Even the 2 we kept weren't all that big. I caught a couple of perch and one pickerel which I also released. The big ones that did get caught yesterday (Kathy's in particular) was released as it was a slot line. Looks like the big ones haven't come into the "shallows" just yet. Either that, or they aren't yet feeding. We were in 32 feet casting into 21 and dragging them to the boat.
September 8, 2011 - 7:05 a.m.
Fishing was definitely on late yesterday afternoon. Everyone caught their limits, released what they had to and brought home the rest. They were back fishing by the red buoy in 32 feet and then down to 23 there abouts. Once the lake had time to settle for a day or two, the fish came back on.
September 7, 2011 - 7:43 a.m.
Dan and I fished out of one boat last night and Ponch and crew out of another. They did better than us. We all started in 21-25 feet and didn't get squat so moved into 31-35 and managed to catch a couple but Dan and I came in and Ponch moved shallower and caught a couple more. Hard to say just yet where the fish are as it's early after that big blow storm. Might try again today as Lake Nipissing has had a couple of days to settle but I think they're starting to move into shallower water again.
August 27, 2011 - 8:52 a.m.
Dan and I went fishing yesterday but it wasn't very good. They're just not "on" yet after the stir-up Lake Nipissing had all week. Marked all kinds of fish but nothing taking the bait. I did manage to catch one keeper, but let it go as that's all we caught. Something big (I'm assuming pike) took my hook at one point so could be why nothing was feeding while we were fishing. That said, we tried a couple of different spots but nothing was biting. Couldn't get out last night as it was rough again and this morning, nobody wants to go. A few people from the park went out so see how they did when they get back in but I suspect not much better than we did yesterday.
August 17, 2100 - 6:59 a.m.
We went fishing yesterday and it still wasn't that great. I caught 2 little ones, which I released and a good sized bass. Dan caught a couple of perch, a small walleye (released) and a slot-line (released). The slot-line didn't make it but the seagulls feasted on the poor thing so it didn't go to waste. Really slow fishing yesterday for sure. Think they might be on the move as the evening hours have been so cool. Likely won't know for sure for another few days. Sometimes they need a reprieve as well, I'm sure.
August 15, 2011 - 6:40 a.m.
Fishing wasn't on yesterday but those who did venture out, caught a couple here and there. Lake Nipissing's water temp has cooled a few degrees so could have something to do with it. Plus it's a full moon so who knows?
August 13, 2011 - 7:45 a.m.
Fishing was definitely on yesterday but we had to work at it. Moved locations 3 times but Dan finally hit the mother load. I caught 6 pics and one really large sheephead. Dan caught 3 perch, 8 pics, one of which was a record for him. Largest pic yet that he's caught on Lake Nipissing. Weighed 9.5 lbs. and was 29" long. Had my picture taken with it and it's on our "fishing" page, right hand margin at the bottom. Not a very good picture of me but you're suppose to be looking at the fish. We came home with 8 as we let the little ones go but honestly, we didn't catch a single fish in the slot. We had some Americans, who are visiting the area, fishing next to us and they actually dropped by after we were done fishing. Needless to say, Dan had bragging rights all day and was in a marvelous mood. Don't catch a fish like that very often.
August 12, 2011 - 6:55 a.m.
We were finally able to get out fishing after supper, around 6:30 as the wind didn't calm until then. Didn't figure it would be that great due to Lake Nipissing getting stirred up over the past few days and we were right. Went out past the bumble bee buoy and Dan was the only one to caught anything. Namely, he got 2 sheephead and one pickerel - all released. I had lots of hits but couldn't catch a fish yesterday if my life depended on it so needless to say, I got skunked!! Don't know how anyone else did but I'm suspecting the same. Fish just weren't hungry yet.
August 10, 2011 - 6:40 a.m.
We tried fishing in the early afternoon yesterday but it got pretty rough so had to come home after 45 minutes. Dan managed to catch one pickerel, which he threw back. I didn't get anything. We were marking fish but too hard to really "feel" them due to the roughness of Lake Nipissing. Tried again after supper and were marking again but they weren't biting. Dan caught a 6 lb. sheephead and I caught a couple of perch. We both had some decent hits but wasn't to be.
August 8, 2011 - 6:17 a.m.
Quite a few of us went fishing yesterday, 3 different boats and all did fairly well. Dan caught his limit, I caught 3, released 2 and also got about a 6 lb. sheephead. Fishing was spotty but they tended to be in 30-32 feet of water. Mike caught a nice sized bass but it was also released.
August 5, 2011 - 6:28 a.m.
Although Dan and I haven't been fishing of late, we hear they're catching out at the bumble bee buoy which means the fish are on the move as Lake Nipissing is at it's warm temperature peak.
August 1, 2011 - 7:28 a.m.
Everyone at our resort did very well this weekend. Lots of fish frys going on. Dan and I didn't get out but may try our luck today if we have time later on. Going to be a nice day to be on the water at any rate.
July 30, 2011 - 7:12 a.m.
I actually received an email this morning from a disgruntled gentleman who was disappointed in my fishing report. I would like to clarify that my fishing blog is by no means an official site. I simply report what I hear from guests, locals, and my own experience. How the fishing on Lake Nipissing is on a whole, I have no idea. I just know how we're doing in our fishing holes and what's being caught. That's what I report. Period. I think it would be very nice if someone set up an official site but no one has the inclination and further more, contacting other resorts to find out how they're doing, you'd never get a straight or honest answer. Our guests know I report honestly and they know what to expect when they get here and that's all I'm concerned about. 'Nuff said.
July 28, 2011 - 7:30 a.m.
Fishing still going strong. We only have one cottage fishing this week but they've been doing pretty well. Already had a decent fry and were able to have another one yesterday with their catch from the morning fish. Guess perhaps Dan and I should make time to get out there again.
July 21, 2011 - 6:35 a.m.
Dan and I haven't been out fishing but others have and as of yesterday, it's still good fishing.
July 17, 2011 - 10:45 a.m.
If you have a spot, the fishing is awesome right now. Everyone's limiting out where we go (yes, it's a well kept secret) and catching all sizes. We need to eat some fish before we can go out again and I like that I can report as such :o)
July 16, 2011 - 8:58 a.m.
Fishing was phenomenal again yesterday. Dan and I both limited out in no time, he caught more (have to give him his due) but of course, we had to let quite a few go. Can't go out again until we eat what we've got unless we do the "catch and release" thing. Fine by me, it's just fun to catch when the fishing is this good. I also caught a 6 lb. sheephead which are always a good fight. Catching in 25 feet of water between 4 and 7 at night. After that, they stop. All classes. The ones we did keep were just under the slot. Let the little ones and the big ones go.
July 15, 2011 - 7:02 a.m.
Dan and I went out fishing last night and was it great!! We both limited out in now time (I caught 6, released 2 and Dan caught 4). All a good size except the two littler ones I let go but we both caught a hog. Mine was a tad bigger :o) at close to 6 lbs. and Dan's was 5.5. Needless to say, we were both very happy. Phil and friends were fishing next to us and did very well also. We caught ours in 25' of water between 6:00 and 7:00. Had a great dinner last night so may go out again this evening. If so, we're going to go out around 5:00 this time.
July 9, 2011 - 7:06 a.m.
Fishing was excellent yesterday morning. Conditions were good for it as it was overcast and a few showers, calm lake. Frank Attwood took Harold (one of the "Newfies") out fishing and he actually outfished Frank. Harold caught his limit but Frank caught an 8 lb. walleye. Needless to say, they had a nice fry.
July 8, 2011 - 6:45 a.m.
Well our American guests did ok yesterday for sure. The youngest in the group, who also happened to be a girl, landed a 25" walleye and was pleased as punch. Everyone caught walleye although not alot. They're certainly biting but biting light.
July 6, 2011 - 7:15 a.m.
Fish have been biting more mid-morning to early afternoon lately but with the rain we are getting, which may change the water temps., that could change.
July 5, 2011 - 6:32 a.m.
Yep, fish are definitely biting. Lots of people did well yesterday. Dan and I got out late, around 11:30 and he managed to catch two nice pickies. They quit biting around 1:00 though and we didn't get out for the evening fish.
July 4, 2011 - 6:03 a.m.
Fish are back on. Claudio and Nic went out last night and limited out and also managed to land a 7.5 lb. walleye. Others didn't do so well. Guess it all depends on your skill, luck and what spot you're sitting on. Shads are pretty much done so the fishing will be back to normal within a few days.
July 3, 2011 - 8:22 a.m.
Apparently fishing for walleye was spotty yesterday. Some people catching lots, others nothing. Bass are on so most people are going for them right now. Catching by Whiskey Island and the Manitous.
June 26, 2011 - 8:55 a.m.
Fishing was excellent the past few days, people limiting out but the shads came in last night so may not be as good for the next few days. It'll pick up again.
June 24, 2011 - 6:54 a.m.
The evening fishing has been great for the Dubilia's out by the red buoy. Caught another 5 lb'er last night, 26". Quite a few slots that they had to throw back but still came home with 3 good ones. See what the weather's doing tonight and maybe Dan and I will go out.
June 22, 2011 - 7:55 a.m.
Fishing was excellent at the Greening Bay hump last night. I didn't go as Dan took the boys out but they came home with a pail full of walleye. One of the Dubila boys (our American guests) was tickled pink. He landed a walleye just under 6 lbs. and was proud as punch. Unfortunately, Dan took the picture and it was too blurry to give it justice so didn't put it on the website. Don't know if anyone's fishing this morning but they should be as the conditions are good for it.
June 21, 2011 - 6:32 a.m.
Our American guests are catching pretty much whatever they've set their minds to. Went down to Callander Bay yesterday for pike and managed to catch a couple. Getting a mixture of pretty much everything. Small and large mouth bass, walleye, perch, pike, and sheephead. Guess it all depends on where you go and what you're fishing for. Dan and I haven't been out since last Thursday so maybe some time this week. I know Dan's planning on taking Brian out at some point this week so will keep you posted.
June 18, 2011 - 6:50 a.m.
Don't know if there are still fish in our bay as it was a blow night due to a storm last night but the morning fish was pretty successful on the "Greening Bay hump" as it's now being called. Fish are definitely going into deeper water now and the word is out that the shads have started. Apparently they're in North Bay. It's the time of the year I guess so the fishing might drop off for a week or so. Still catch 'em but it'll be tough. We have seen any shads yet but I'm sure they're out there.
June 16, 2011 - 5:55 a.m.
There's been some discussion as to whether or not the fish are still in Greening Bay. I know when Dan and I went out Tuesday evening, they were still there, just not biting. Lunar moon and all that, who knows. Didn't look like many were being catch in the bay last night either. Dan and I may go out this evening so if we do, will let you know. If they've moved into deeper water, we should catch at another spot.
June 15, 2011 - 7:32 a.m.
Dan and I went fishing last night and that's pretty much exactly what we did. Fish, 'cause we sure didn't catch much. Fish were definitely in the spots we tried but just weren't hungry. They were sucking on the worms, biting lightly, you could feel them tugging but as soon as you tried to set the hook, they let go. Dan managed to get two, one so little he put it back, one keeper. All I did was lose about 20 worms. Was getting quite ticked off and obviously not my night. Same thing was happening to everyone around us. Oh well, today's another day. Full moon could have something to do with the way they're feeding right now...
June 14, 2011 - 6:16 a.m.
There were 6 or 7 boats in our bay last night but haven't yet heard how they did. Will talk to our neighbour sometime today and update tomorrow. Who knows, maybe Dan and I will get out this evening...
June 13, 2011 - 6:28 a.m.
Blow day yesterday. Nothing to report.
June 12, 2011 - 9:40 a.m.
All our guests caught fish this weekend and had themselves at least one fry so they're happy. Not fishing today as it's windy and showers.
June 10, 2011 - 7:52 a.m.
OMG!! Was the fishing excellent last night!! They were jumping in our boat. Black and gold wally's were biting in our bay. Doesn't happen like that very often but brings a tear to the eye when it does. Dan and I both limited out and then some. Caught 12, brought home our limit and could have caught more if we were so inclined. I caught all mine before it was even peak time. The conditions were perfect though. Walleye chop in 12 feet of water. Everyone was watching us haul them in, some did well, others didn't. I swear it's all in the technique. When fishing is that good, it's hard to come off the lake but hey, when you have your limit, it's time. Dan caught a couple of big sheephead also. Hoping the fishing is as good this evening but that'll be an anomaly.
June 8, 2011 - 6:30 a.m
Dan and I went fishing last night around 6:30 just past the red buoy by the Waltonian and each caught keeper walleye and Dan also caught some perch. We then headed into our bay just off the point. The fish were biting there as well and Dan caught more walleye. Moved in to 10' of water and caught more. We ended up coming home with 5 in the pail but most of them were too small to keep. At any rate, we have enough for tonight's supper. Our guests have been catching too small or too big.
June 7, 2011 - 7:22 a.m.
Sorry for the delay in updating this past week - no net. Fishing has been pretty good to spotty all over the place. Lots of slot lines to over the slot line walleye being caught. Anywhere from 10 to 25 feet of water. Bass on are strong this year also but not in season yet so keep that in mind.
May 31, 2011 - 6:00 p.m.
The gold and black walleye have started moving into Greening Bay. Being caught in all depths of water if you can catch them. Dan kicked my butt last night. Got 3 nice ones in the boat and lost 2 at the surface. I had mega bites all night but just couldn't seem to hook them. Guess it just wasn't my night.
May 30, 2011 - 8:00 a.m.
If it's any indication, there were 19 boats in Greening Bay last night so the walleye are producing. Haven't had a chance to talk to our guests this morning but will update once I have on how they did. Wouldn't mind getting out there myself some time this evening.
May 29, 2011 - 6:32 a.m.
Fishing was pretty good for our guests this weekend. Namely Dave Michiels who caught a 28", 7.5 lbs. walleye around Bennett Island on Friday. I took a picture and it's now on our site, right margin under fishing, bottom picture. Nice fish and it was eaten pretty quickly. Lots of small pike caught and the walleye run has started in Greening Bay albeit a short one. They're hitting quick and not for very long. Dan and I went out Friday night and saw no action so came in. About 5 minutes after we headed for shore, they hit and our neighbour and his wife caught 4 wally's in a very short period of time. Haven't been out since but today's another day.
May 26, 2011 - 6:10 a.m.
Our guests went out mid-afternoon yesterday one group did manage to catch a good sized walleye. The other group caught a couple of small pike. Dan and I went out in the bay last night figuring they'd be biting pretty good due to the low pressure and the fact a storm was coming but they still aren't on just yet. I managed to catch a really good keeper but Dan didn't catch a thing. Had lots of bites, lost lots of worms but they really were biting light. Caught mine around 8:00 in 10 feet of water and then nothing.
May 25, 2011 - 6:40 a.m.
Looks like the fish are just starting to move into Greening Bay. They're definitely coming into the shallows now. Dan and I went out last night, just in our bay, and around 8:00, I caught a 5 lb. sheephead. Don't care what anyone says, they're fun to catch. Shortly after, Dan caught a 14" walleye. We were in 10 feet of water at that point, had a few nibbles but decided to go into 8 feet. Dan caught a 3 lb. bass, which shocked him as we've never caught a bass in the bay before. Seems like the bass are showing up in a lot of our walleye spots the past few years. Stayed in the 8' for a bit and I caught a really nice keeper, just under the slot. It was getting cold so we pulled anchor and decided to drift into 6' before going in. Just as Dan started to engine to go in, something huge hit and when I tugged, I felt the weight but it completely snapped my line, took the hook and all. Dan figures it was a big pike. All I know is the thing was massive. Wasn't going to stay around and try to catch it again with only 12 lb. test so headed in. Saw a few other wally's caught in the bay last night but they're not completely on yet, just starting. Give it another few days.
May 24, 2011 - 6:20 a.m.
All in all, some pretty decent fish were caught over the weekend. More quality than quantity. Couple of 30" pike caught yesterday along with some walleye and perch. Dan didn't want to take me out last night, although I begged. Wish he would have because today is definitely a blow day. The last of our guests are checking out today so won't affect them and tomorrow more checking in but wind is suppose to settle down later on.
May 23, 2011 - 6:50 a.m.
As stated yesterday, the fish are out there, just not real hungry yet. Some of our guests opted to try for pike yesterday and ended up getting a muskie on their line. Unfortunately, they lost it at the boat but were able to see what the heck it was. Mostly over the slot walleye has been caught. The little ones aren't in the usual spots just yet. Give it another week. Lots of bass being caught also, too bad it doesn't open for another 4 weeks.
May 22, 2011 - 7:55 a.m.
Well the opening fish held mixed reviews. Some people caught, most people didn't. Those that ventured out in the morning to some favourite haunts did ok. Alot of large ones caught and several over the slot line were kept. Last night, they were definitely in our bay but just not taking the hook yet. Still early, give it another week. Those that didn't fish in our bay were catching on a shelf going from 18 feet to 7 feet of water so best bet is to try the shallows for now.
March 5, 2011 - 7:22 a.m.
This will be my last fishing report entry until the spring. Currently catching the walleye all over the place but no set spots/holes. It's basically a hit and miss situation so good luck to all of you still venturing out to fish. Perch is still plentiful at the normal locations so it's not over yet. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our guests from this past winter. We had a great season and lots of fish frys. Here's hoping you'll continue to "shop Greening Bay" in the future. Will start the fishing blog up again opening weekend in the spring. Have a great winter, what's left of it!!
February 27, 2011 - 8:23 a.m.
We're offically done fishing for the year folks. If I hear about the fishing, I'll continue to update the blog. Our guests all had a major pig out on perch last night and I was blessed to have tried one of the best batters I've ever had in my life. Next time you're cooking perch, try cheese flavoured ritz crackers. Awesome. Anyhow, I took our surplus bait back to our dealer (Dale) this morning and he's heard the pickerel are in Callander Bay. Haven't been there the whole month of February but are now moving in towards the falls (Wasi Falls) where they breed in the spring. They're early (again, another indication spring will be early this year) so should be good fishing there until the lake shuts down for the season. Also hitting them at Cross Point area. Our guests next weekend are planning on fishing there so will update at that time. I got one little pick last night, let it go and don't plan on fishing again this season but chances are I'll drop a line somewhere next weekend. Another smelt was caught in one of our holes yesterday as well as a small pike. Fishing is still really good on Lake Nipissing, it's just finding them at this point. The picks should be running huge in our bay by May long weekend if the spring is as early as I think it's going to be.
February 26, 2011 - 6:57 a.m.
I didn't go fishing yesterday for obvious reasons but the boys did pretty well. Tons of perch but only one good-sized keeper walleye was caught by Rejean. He's winning the $20 for biggest pickie so far (are these boys optimistic or what, betting on walleye?). Our hut that's been the biggest producer of perch this year was dead yesterday afternoon so think there was likely a big pike around. It's too bad because our guests occupying that hut are specifically after perch. There's always today.
February 25, 2011 - 6:45 a.m.
I was mistaken about the pike that Al caught on Wednesday. They tried to let it go but it got caught between the water and ice, as happens this time of year. However, when they went out yesterday morning, it was gone so obviously was able to find a hole and get back down. Sorry Al, but Anthony's group managed to catch the whitefish you missed. Was a good 6 lbs. at least so they had a nice feed on that, I'm sure. They aren't too happy with the overall fishing though, stating "we can catch these on Simcoe". Meaning of course, the perch. Sorry boys but this time of year, things do slow down. I only caught one pickerel yesterday and that was tough to get. I think the fishing's starting to shut down for the season and most of the walleye are done feeding for the winter. That's why the herring are moving in. Still, there's lots of perch to be caught as well as pike and whitefish. This is the last weekend we're running and the large group coming in next weekend are going to be self-sufficient, fishing elsewhere on Lake Nipissing (namely Cross Point) so I'll be able to report on their status at that time.
February 24, 2011 - 6:20 a.m.
Fishing was any good for me yesterday but then our guests caught a large pike out of their hut and let it go. An abundance of perch was caught by everyone though. I only got a couple of pickerel hits but they weren't taking. It's been sunny the past couple of days. Fishing should be excellent today with the pressure low and snow in the forecast.
February 23, 2011 - 6:58 a.m.
Fish were starting to bite again yesterday after being pretty quiet for a few days due to the weekend storm. Our guests caught a bunch of perch and missed a large whitefish at the hole. Didn't get any walleye. I caught my first herring this season and figured that was it for the pickerel but a run came on last night around 5:15. I caught the smallest walleye I've ever seen in my life. The thing didn't even measure 4 inches. It went down the hole though. Then I caught a 12-13 inch'er but had to keep it as it swallowed the hook - gave it to our guests. Missed a beauty right at the hole, got a piece of it's tail before it got away with my hook. Broke the line right above the hole. I figure it was a good 20 inches so would have had to let it go anyhow but I was a little ticked just the same.
February 21, 2011 - 6:12 a.m.
Well this past storm really did a number on the fishing. I think it started to recover yesterday afternoon as our last group of guests managed to catch quite a few perch but no walleye. There was some pickerel caught in the morning though. I didn't go out. No one fishing again until Tuesday unless I go so will see what's going on at that point. Pressure is falling today so hopefully things will pick up over the next day or two if it stays steady. Personally, I think the fishing is nearly done for the season. Likely another week or two before the fish go dormant for the season. There were quite a few herring quite this past weekend which is usually a good indicator but that said, who knows.
February 20, 2011 - 7:12 a.m.
I think fishing was pretty good yesterday. Some huts caught better than others but at least all the groups were able to catch fish. Perch, walleye, pike, herring. Mostly perch but that usually goes without saying. Pressure is high but steady so they should catch this morning. Hoping to get out ourselves this afternoon. Dan will be cleaning huts for a bit so I'll fish until he can join me.
February 19, 2011 - 7:45 a.m.
Fishing was so-so yesterday. Lots of perch caught in some huts, not so much in others. Good sized pike caught. No walleye. Not surprised. With the way the wind was blowing, there were white caps inside the hut holes for God's sake. That is until Dan got them re-banked, which he did twice yesterday. That said, the morning fish is off to a good start. Nailing perch right off the crank so hopefully they'll be catching better today. Pressure isn't too high just yet but on the rise.
February 17, 2011 - 6:49 a.m.
Ton of perch caught yesterday. One group came off the ice early as they had enough fish. Another group managed to catch a pike although it wasn't a big one. Could be why they didn't get any walleye and said the perch died right off mid-afternoon. I didn't go out, likely should have but was too tired.
February 16, 2011 - 7:02 a.m.
Was the fishing good yesterday or what? Lots of perch caught by everyone and admittedly missed the wally's. I think alot of walleye are being missed just because of the way they're biting this year. One thing for sure, don't jerk your lines. I've been watching everybody and as soon as they get a hit, they pull up or jerk their lines, which loses them. When you get a hit, gently put your finger under your line so you can feel the weight. You'll feel the pressure of the wally and when it pulls, just lift the line up with your finger to set the hook. One guest indicated they caught over 100 perch, kept only the decent sized ones and still had half a pail full. I went out for a couple of hours and the fish I caught got progressively bigger as time went on. First thing I caught was a perch which I had to keep as it coughed. Something was screwing with my lines and finally caught a mud puppy. I rolled up the lines once and caught my first pickie, which was a 13"er so kept it as I didn't know how the walleye run was going to be. Caught a 15" after that and then something started messing with my lines again. I rolled down once again to see what the hey. Well got a nice one on and the sucker got off half way up, taking the minnow and hook with it. Got on a different line yet again and managed to get it to the hole so saw it was a beauty and it got off again, taking just the minnow this time. I was determined so stuck it out and guess third time's the charm. Finally landed it. Turned out to be a 24" male. When Dan cleaned it he couldn't believe it had milk. Said he's yet to see a male that big on Lake Nipissing. Still had my hook and two minnows in it. Don't mess with me baby!! Fishing should be great today also as the pressure has dropped and the warm front is pretty much here. That said, I didn't think the fishing would be as good as it was yesterday especially with a full moon imminent.
February 14, 2011 - 7:22 a.m.
I managed to fish from 4-5:30 yesterday and would rather not talk about it, but I will. First time this year I got skunked. There was little to no action until around 5:15 when I started getting walleye hits but they weren't taking and I was working hard at trying to land them. As I had to head to shore at 5:30 to check in some guests, I'll never know if I could have got some pickies or not. Perch were biting as usual yesterday, pretty good in the morning but even they slowed down in the afternoon. Pressure is way low (too low) this morning and with the several different fronts coming through this week, no idea what the fishing will be like. Can't get out there today and don't have anyone fishing until tomorrow morning but will keep you posted.
February 13, 2011 - 7:03 a.m.
Sorry, hard to tell how the fishing was yesterday as I really couldn't get much of a straight answer from anyone. Furthermore, alot of the guys were in/out in/out all day yesterday. The perch were biting, that goes without saying but I don't think fishing was as good yesterday as Friday. Pressure was high and rising but today it's low and falling so should be a decent morning fish. Calling for mild temps all week, really mild temps.
February 12, 2011 - 7:20 a.m.
We don't have what you would call "avid fishermen" in this weekend but those that did fish, caught. Lots of perch and most of the walleye were missed. There was definitely a run last night and the Robbins group missed a beauty. The pressure wasn't all that great yesterday and today it's on the rise. It's extremely windy today so don't know how it's going to affect the fishing but it's being snowing and blowing and overcast so should help as it was mostly sunny yesterday until late afternoon. Lake conditions definitely not conducive to vehicle or ATV traffic today.
February 11, 2011 - 6:08 a.m.
Well looks like the walleye are running early these days. Went out again yesterday around 4:00 and tried the hut Dan moved. Couldn't keep up with the perch so moved into a different hut and missed the walleye run. Got a couple of little ones which I released but it was all over by 5:00. They weren't really biting but minnows very active as something huge was chasing them. When I jigged, I felt it one the line but lost it almost immediately. Likely a hog or pike. See what the weekend brings for the boys. Pressure is currently high and on the rise but that should change by mid-day as snow is in the forecast and much milder temps coming in.
February 10, 2011 - 7:11 a.m.
Well the giggle was taken out of the boys yesterday, don't know if it was from too much fishing or too much fun but they were only half-heartedly fishing yesterday. Said they had enough fish. Is there ever too much fish? I went out around 4:00 and caught my first walleye right off the crank. Was a keeper than I caught a small one. Not quite a cigar but small enough I let it go. Caught another nice one and then lost one right at the hole. Had it up and when it got off I dove for it up to my elbow but only caught a piece of it's tail before it went down. By that time, it was around 5:15 and had a few hits after that but couldn't get them. Completely dead by 5:30 so came home. Hoping this afternoon to try the hut Dan moved yesterday to see what it's producing.
February 9, 2011 - 5:44 a.m.
I gotta say, this has been, without a doubt, one of the best ice fishing seasons we've had in a long time. The ice conditions have been great with lots of snow and good weather and the fishing hasn't been bad at all. The guys got some more walleye and a nice pail of good sized perch yesterday. They missed a huge hog at the hole. Where able to see the head and said it was REALLY big. Guess there's always today for another shot. Pressure is really low and falling and the warm front is on it's way in for the weekend so fishing should continue to be good throughout. Incidently, I saw the smelt that was caught yesterday. It was indeed, a smelt and about 5" long. They decided they were going to eat it instead of using it for bait :o)
February 8, 2011 - 8:20 a.m.
UPDATE: Dan called from ice (9:15) and they caught a 5" smelt this morning. The biologist in the group said that's a good thing. If the smelt are running under our huts, the fish will follow to feed. This is definitely a first!! They're keeping the smelt to use as bait.
Fishing was pretty good yesterday. Pail full of perch for our guests and then Dan fished with Jim McFadden's group last night to help them catch some walleye. Honestly, people are missing them more often than not. Dan caught 3 and Jim's group got one, they came home with 3 as one of Dan's was a little guy. Dan said if I was out there, they would have caught more :o) I'm taking a break from fishing for a few days. We did have walleye for supper last night so that'll do me 'til Thursday. Dan talked about moving the huts but we're still catching fish so why take the chance? As long as the guests this weekend keep the holes clean, they'll do well. Mud puppies have been hanging around so there has been things dropped down the hole - minnows, skins, whatever. I know they eat the roe but there isn't any down there right now so let the suckers clean it up.
February 7, 2011 - 6:58 a.m.
The morning fish was pretty good for our guests but they only caught perch. I went out around 4:00 and it was slow. There was something around, likely a pike so nothing for at least an hour and then I ended up catching 6 walleyes. Kept two, let the little ones and a nice 20" go. Missed two good ones on the way up and a bunch of others when they hit. Just not biting hard this year at all. Our guests today were all suppose to go out at 7:00 but I think they were Super Bowling last night as there is no movement anywhere. I'm hoping they catch the big pike that's been hanging around sometime this week. There's a marine biologist staying here and he has a fantastic underwater camera so I hope he can see just what's been terrorizing our holes :o)
February 6, 2011 - 6:50 a.m.
I just don't know what to say about the nighttime fish yesterday. Pressure was extremely low and conditions perfect for fishing (i.e. overcast, steady temps) and we should have slayed them last night but it wasn't that good. I only caught one walleye and that was it. Everyone was steadily catching the perch and other species throughout the day but when the evening run came, things got extremely quite. I think there were some major predators around, aka pike. One group of guests missed a huge pike on Friday so maybe the sucker came back. The pike have been around lately so who knows. My minnows were constantly being chased and I had some wally's on them a few times but couldn't get them. At least everyone had a nice fry or two this weekend.
February 5, 2011 - 7:13 a.m.
Fishing was good yesterday. Lots caught but no walleye that I know of. I think the guys were missing them all. Dan said when he was in a couple of the huts he had to tell everyone their tip-ups were going. Ya snooze, ya lose. Couple of pike were caught yesterday as well and one group missed what they figure was an 18 lb'er at the hole. I may head out this afternoon as the pressure is really low and falling so fishing should be great.
February 4, 2011 - 6:58 a.m.
Dan was going to move our one hut yesterday but I asked him to let me try it one more time before he did. I would like to reinterate, "do NOT put fish oil down the holes". The hut I'm talking about hasn't been used all week so has had time to "clean itself" of the reminents left behind from others. I limited out. Caught 3 little ones that I put back, they weren't quite cigars, more the 12-13 inchers, then caught a nice keeper, then I got my hog. Was 24" and pretty much 6 lbs. (5 7/8 to be exact) and took it over to cottage #4 so there were witnesses. I don't want people to think I b.s. on my blog, which I don't. They all took pictures of themselves with MY fish. Too funny. At any rate, fishing is going to be excellent this weekend (my prediction). We're still fishing in 28-30 feet of water and again, use one minnow on one hook. No fancy stuff, but you need to get right on your rod as soon as it moves because if your tip-up slams down, you've already missed it.
February 2, 2011 - 7:03 a.m.
The boys went fishing for a couple of hours late yesterday afternoon and just kept 13 good sized perch, all over 10 inches, let the rest go. They didn't stay out long enough for the night run so no idea how the walleye are biting. I may go this afternoon as the pressure has dropped considerably and is continuing to drop. Should be a good weekend for fishing as the temps are going to be mild which means a stable low pressure system.
January 31, 2011 - 8:00 a.m.
Fishing slow. Cold temps came in overnight on Saturday and things slowed down. I went fishing for a couple of hours yesterday afternoon and managed to get my pike for the season. Get one every year. Just a small one which I put back. I was just catching perch and headed home before the wally run. Don't think fishing'll be any good for a few days as the pressure is WAY high and it's extremely cold today. I wanted to mention a discovery I made yesterday. When I catch the small perch (babies really), I usually use my syringe to suck the air out of their bladders and they go right down the hole. Sometimes it doesn't work. Yesterday I figured out that if they are floating on their backs, holding them upright in the hole for a minute does something to help them out and they go right down. Keep that in mind next time you catch a baby perch instead of wasting them please.
January 29, 2011 - 8:04 a.m.
Fishing was pretty darn good yesterday. Had a mixture of everything caught...pike, ling, perch and walleye. Couple of good size pike and the ling was huge but didn't get measured. One avid fisherman with his own transportation stayed out until full on dark and caught two nice walleye's around the 23-24" mark. Pressure's high and on the rise today so suspect the fishing won't be as good today as it was yesterday. Them's the breaks.
January 28, 2011 - 7:24 a.m.
Our one group of guests yesterday did pretty good. Dan figures they had 20 lbs. of fish between the 4 of them. Helped that they caught two pike (one a good size, one small one), a ton of perch but only one walleye. From what I could tell from the hut I was in, the walleye were there, just not biting yet. Had a couple of good hits but couldn't get them. Pressure's low this morning and falling so if they're on them, the fishermen should get some wally's this morning. If the pressure holds, the run tonight will be a good one.
January 27, 2011 - 7:08 a.m.
Although high, the pressure was falling yesterday so Dan and I went out after we finished our work for the day. Fished separate huts to see what the hey. Fish were on the incline although not back to where they were prior to the massive cold front. Dan was pulling perch up non-stop and I caught 3 in my hut as well as two walleye's. One was a keeper so I had fish for supper last night. The run definitely came through but they weren't biting all that great just yet. Figured today for sure but the pressure is on the rise again and still relatively high. We need a major low pressure system to come through to bring the fishing back to where it was. Still, fish are definitely going to caught this weekend so everyone should have a decent fry.
January 25, 2011 - 7:32 a.m.
Still need another day at least for the pressure to equalize as fishing was terrible again yesterday. Dan had work to do on ice so I went out to try the fishing. Shouldn't have bothered. Only caught 3 little perch which I really had to work at as nothing was biting at all.
January 24, 2011 - 11:02 a.m.
Well fishing sucked yesterday. I'm glad everyone was able to have a nice fry this weekend but yesterday was a collossal waste of time. The cold really affected the fishing and as much as we try to accommodate our guests, there isn't much we can do about the weather. The pressure was extremely high all day and still was this morning although it's started to drop. Temps are rising so the fishing should pick up in the next day or two.
January 23, 2011 - 7:03a.m.
Geez, even with these outrageous temps our guys caught fish yesterday. Mostly perch, but some wally's. Don't know if there was anything worth reporting caught because it was too cold to stand around and discuss it when the guys got off the ice. Most of them headed directly for the heat in the cottages without saying much. Nasty cold again today and then the temps start to rise overnight. One group's already out on the ice and another may be heading that way so we'll see how the morning fish goes. Pressure is still high and rising.
January 22, 2011 - 7:46 a.m.
Fishing wasn't too bad yesterday considering. Marty Spoelstra finally caught a ling, which he was quite happy about but only one walleye and it was a cigar. Lots of perch caught by everyone, of course, and 6 or 7 wally's caught by another group. Also a 6 lb. pike caught. Don't think the fishing'll be too great today. Temps are super cold and pressure high and rising. I'm sure they'll catch perch at least as they tend to bite all the time although not as great during this kind of weather. Cold front sticking around for the duration of the weekend, won't get decent weather until at least Tuesday of next week.
January 21, 2011 - 7:10 a.m.
The pressure is very low this morning and falling so fishing should be good today. Yesterday, the guys caught 70+ perch and kept 40. Missed the walleye after having a few really good hits. Don't know about the fishing tomorrow as it's going to be cold both Saturday and Sunday which means high pressure will be coming in sometime today or over night.
January 19, 2011 - 7:32 a.m.
Well here's something new. The fishing absolutely sucked late yesterday afternoon. It was so mild through the day and then the wind picked up and the pressure was rising quickly. The walleye were there, they just wouldn't take the bait. I caught two, one cigar which I released (Dan as well) and one keeper. By the time it hit dark, I still only had the one in the pail. Get this. It had been in the pail for likely 1.5 hours and I thought, what the hey, put it in the hole and the sucker swam away. Are those wally tough or what? Starved for oxygen all that time and it took off. I think, because this cold front is stable and sticking around, the fishing will be good for the weekend.
January 18, 2011 - 7:58 a.m.
I went fishing last night for a few hours as I won't be able to go again this week. Too busy. That said, I got 9 wally's, kept 4 good ones. Let a cigar go
