PLEASE NOTE INFORMATION FOR DAILY FISHING REPORT IS GATHERED THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND UNDATED THE FOLLOWING MORNING - THEREFORE INFORMATION WILL ALWAYS BE A DAY BEHIND CURRENT DATE

The pike spawn in on!! Saw about a 5lb. sow with two small jacks on either side of her yesterday. They were spawning in our creek. Saw the ripples and ruckus this morning as well so we know they're right on schedule. Bay is open and lake opaque so with a little wind in the next few days it should open the lake up. Callander Bay is the same.

Today Lake Nipissing officially closes for the season. Because it was such a beautiful day yesterday (wish Dan woulda been here to drill me some holes) our neighbour Len went and fished outside - his hut is off the lake. Within the first 10 minutes he caught a monster walleye that had to be put back and did quite well the rest of the afternoon. Fishing is good right now but think they've started moving in some. No snow on the ice whatsoever and huts are being moved off. This will be my last "fishing report" entry until the fishing resumes on Lake Nipissing in May.
March 14, 2008
Lake Nipissing officially closes for the fishing season tomorrow. Haven't seen a whole lot of traffic this week out there. Think it's closing just in time as the weather is forecasting rain and mild temps this week.
March 13, 2008
Although this doesn't really pertain to fishing, it's an indication that the fishing must still be pretty good as people are risking themselves to do it. A good friend of ours was in a truck last night between Lonely Island and the Waltonian Inn and they put the truck through the ice. Only the back end went through which blew both back tires and they escaped with only minor injuries (Meph has a pretty good size bump on his noggin from hitting the windshield) - had to get the truck towed off the ice though. There was also another vehicle that went through last Friday. And people wonder why we never run the last two weeks....
March 10, 2008
None of us went fishing this weekend although the intent was there intially. Word on Lake Nipissing is that the fishing has slowed down. I think they are starting to move into shallower water. All our huts are off the ice now so won't be getting a fishing report from me but will keep you posted if I hear anything. There is only 5 days left to the season before the lake closes until May long weekend.
March 4, 2008
Sorry I haven't been reporting lately but we shut down the ice fishing to guests after the weekend. Fishing was slow on the weekend due to the weather front which came through. It rained hard all day yesterday and got up to +7. Cold front came in overnight and blew at least 70 kpm all night. When we got up this morning, part of our bay was open. It's early for that but with the constant thaws we've been having it's not surprising. We are fishing Thursday for sure and then calling it a season. Will let you know how the fishing is but I think they are starting to move into shallower water.
February 29, 2008
Happy Leap Year!! Well the fishing was good today IF you were actually paying attention to your lines. The perch were biting huge and kept stealing minnows. Walleye ran in the morning but alot were missed. I can't stress enough how lightly they are biting right now. Half the time you don't even know one's there until your minnow is long gone. Walleye run came through at night but most were missed. I'm going to try my luck tomorrow.
February 26, 2008
I had but one goal this ice fishing season and that was to do something I'd never done before...catch a hog walleye. After much patience and perserverance, at around 5:00 last night I finally got one!! She was 28" long and weighed close to 5 lbs. Surprisingly enough, she didn't SLAM the tip-up down. She just nibbled and I waited with my finger on the line until I could feel lots of pressure and just gently hooked her. Hauling her up wasn't as exciting as catching a smaller wally because she really didn't fight too much. Just had her hooked in her lip but she sure started fighting once I had her on the floor of the hut!! That said, if I ever catch another one that size, there are a few things things I'd do differently. Firstly, I wouldn't turn my back on Dan because before I could even get a picture of her, he had her cut up and in the fry pot (thank God I had witnesses). Secondly, I think I'd let her go. The meat isn't as good as the small wally's for one thing. For another, I figure a fish that big has served it's purpose in reproducing and should be left to live out it's life. I was actually feeling guilty (after I ate her of course) but was pacified by convincing myself she likely just would have ended up rotting in a gill net somewhere!! Our guests managed to catch 4 keeper walleye during the run last night as well. The perch were just non-stop from about 2:30 on. We don't have anyone fishing again until Friday and I won't be out there as I need to give the "fish cuts" on my hands a chance to heal!!
February 25, 2008
Our guests and myself went out yesterday afternoon around 3:00. They were catching perch and some walleye but also missing alot. In my hut, I got a baby walleye and a few perch right off the bat and then nothing but baby perch so told the guys in the other hut I thought there was a pike around and if they catch it, keep it or they won't see anymore wally's. About 1/2 hour later, I caught a 60 cm pike and had to get the guys to gaff it for me as it was between the hut and the ice. They ended up keeping it to eat. Only caught another baby wally after that along with the perch so this is the first time in a long time I didn't get my limit. Today is another day...
February 24, 2008
Fishing was good again yesterday. I caught my limit, released two (one slot, one baby). Once the Zavitz group saw me haul up a walleye they started paying more attention to their lines and ended up with 6 keepers. Kirk, one of the group is now totally hooked on fishing - literally. Poor guy. Biggest fish he caught was himself when he stuck a treble hook through his hand. He had his thumb and index finger caught but Dr. Dan managed to free him without a trip to Emerg...
February 23, 2008
Fishing was great again yesterday. Our two huts produced over seventy fish - mostly perch, some walleye, some pike. Only one group stayed long enough for the evening walleye run and caught 3 or 4 I believe. The big group is here mostly to party but they are catching plenty. Biting started as soon as the lines were down this morning and with it now being overcast, I'm sure it'll be a good fishing day - which is why I'm going out later this afternoon...
February 22, 2008
Our guests fished yesterday morning and said the fishing was slow. I went out in the afternoon around 4:00 and fished out of the same hut. Caught alot of perch - only kept 3 that shallowed the hook, the others I pierced their bladders and got down the hole. Also caught and kept 3 walleye. It was constant action and everything was biting really light. The group that went out this morning didin't make the morning walleye run but have had constant action all day - alot of perch, couple of walleye and couple of pike. We are still fishing in the same spot (haven't had to move the huts) in about 30 to 35 feet of water.
February 21, 2008
Ok, I'm beginning to think our fishermen really need to start paying attention to their lines!! Our guests yesterday did pretty good during the morning run but didn't get hard anything in the evening run while I, Lynn the fishing godess pulled 5 walleyes (taking home my limit) and missed several. Now to be fair...the current was very strong last night and the wally's were biting very light. Still....
February 20, 2008
Guys got out on the ice around 2:45 yesterday afternoon and immediately began catching perch. Caught and missed lots, got a good size pike and hit the walleye run around 4:30. Missed alot of them but also managed to keep some so fishing was quite good yesterday afternoon/early evening. See what the full moon does for the fishing today...
February 17, 2008
Fishing has definitely picked up although still not as good as a few or two ago. Everyone caught fish yesterday. Those actually paying attention to their lines did better than those more into the socializing aspect of ice fishing. Walleye run went through this morning and the one group caught two good ones and missed 3 or 4 biggies. Pickerel have been biting very light lately though. Don't know how this weather system is going to affect the fishing but it could be a good thing although they seem to have been biting more during the high pressure systems vs. the lows this year.
February 16, 2008
Won't be able to report how our fishing is until later today. Word on the lake is it's slow but picking up so we'll see.
February 12, 2008
Sorry but likely won't have much to report for the next couple of days as we aren't running mid-weekers this week. Need to give my hands a chance to heal up after all the walleye cuts I've gotten over the past couple of days so I won't be going out either. Maybe a little later in the week. If I hear how the rest of the lake is doing, will let you know.
February 11, 2008
Fishing was very tough yesterday. In talking to another resort owner, it was tough all weekend but yesterday in particular, you couldn't buy a fish on Lake Nipissing. It isn't the fishing spots we have, it was the cold front/weather/pressure system we think that is affecting the fishing. I only caught two pickerel and one perch all afternoon yesterday and the one group we had left managed to get a couple of herring (fishing to close to the top) and a mud puppy (fishing to close to the bottom). Couldn't even keep anything they caught. Guess that's why they call it fishing and not catching. Hopefully the weather will straighten out through the week and be back on track for the weekend.
February 10, 2008
Our one group of 7 men who left this morning said they caught around 50 fish but didn't keep many. Everyone was saying how the fishing was slow??? but I caught my limit and then some yet again yesterday. Could be the noise level, alcohol level or many other things but I do well because I fish on my own and watch my lines. Yesterday I fished in 34' of water. Caught 5 keepers, 2 really nice slot lines and one baby so did manage to bring some fish home last night. Likely going out again this afternoon. Pretty much every hut was catching something yesterday be it walleye, perch, herring...
February 9, 2008
General concensus yesterday was that the fishing was slow. I didn't want to believe it so went out around 3:00. At 4:00 the walleye run came through. I caught my limit but couldn't keep any. Three were huge slot line and one was a baby. I didn't fish with our guests but off by myself in about 26' of water. Our huts are in 30'-34'. Today however, they are catching so guess it was a slow day yesterday which only picked up late afternoon. One of the huts told us a walleye jumped right into their hut after coming up through the hole. Now, one would have to think that's definitely a fish story but they said it had been swimming around the top of the ice so must have been injured and when they were able, they pulled it up. Hey, nobody said you actually have to catch a fish on a line...
February 8, 2008
Dave caught a "just over the slotline" walleye yesterday morning. He was quite happy and after cleaning her at the cottage, ate her on the ice - fitting, wouldn't you say? They did ok but said the run in the evening was slow. Likely due to the cold front/pressure system that came through. God forbid it could be their fishing skills??? Just kidding guys but hey, tip ups are definitely the way to go. I'm hoping to get out there this afternoon so will see what the heck and keep you posted.
February 7, 2008
Fishing was good yesterday although the one group said they didn't do as well as the previous day. They did manage to get some walleye (slot line) and the other group was able to keep 5. Cold front moved in over night so don't know how it'll affect the fishing. Will know later in the day.
February 6, 2008
Who's yo' Daddy?? Lynn's a fishing godess once again!! I went out around 3:00 and didn't even get a nibble and then at 4:00 all hell broke loose. I caught 8 walleye, kept 4. One huge slot line and a couple of babies went back down the hole. The two groups that are in right now were getting perch, some pike, etc. all day and managed to get a few wally's during the runs. Biting was steady this morning.
February 5, 2008
Our mid-weekers did very well yesterday afternoon. Caught about 50 fish, kept the good size perch and walleye. Caught some herring but no pike, which is what they really want. Don't like them around the hole if I'm fishing for walleye but hey, to each their own. I'm sure they'll get one before their trip is over. Fish were nibbling first thing this morning when I dropped some more minnows off so I'm definitely getting out there later this afternoon if I get my work done.
February 4, 2008
Don't know what the fishing is going to be like this afternoon when our group goes out but if the activity in the minnow tank is any indication is should be great. Usually when the minnows are really active it means the fishing will be good. Will keep you posted. May even drop a line myself if I can find some time today...
February 3, 2008
Fishing was good yesterday. Everyone caught perch and walleye, even a whitefish. Weather was exceptional, beautiful day to fish outside. Only one group went out this morning and I suspect did well because it's overcast with light snow.
February 2, 2008
Apparently the fishing wasn't as good yesterday as the day before. Haven't heard anything about today but may head out there myself this afternoon. The "newbies" caught some perch yesterday but missed both walleye runs. They headed out around noon today and are staying for the duration so hopefully they'll get some pickerel to add to their catch. Others did manage to get their limit yesterday as well as a good size pike.
February 1, 2008
Haven't heard yet how the morning fish went. Last night the group caught a couple of walleye but indicated there was pike in the area. They managed to catch one but released it as it was too small to keep.
January 31, 2008
When I picked up the bait this morning, Mae told me the fishing has been terrible the past couple of days - so she's heard. We figured the storm would affect it but Dan called from the ice at 8:45 this morning and said the walleye run came on for our guys at around 8:30 and they had just caught two good size keepers just under the slot and one really good one in the slot that they had to release. Said it swallowed the hook so hope it'll be ok. They are a pretty tough fish so am sure it'll live. Perch are biting as well. Storm probably did affect the fishing in other areas of the lake (close to tributaries where the bottom can get stirred up) but it's fishing as usual at our spot.
January 30, 2008
Sorry, still nothing yet to report. If there are people fishing on Lake Nipissing today (aka ice bungalows) I wish them luck!! The way Dan said the shacks are justa rocking' with the high winds we're experiencing it certainly can't be making for a very pleasant ice fishing experience!! That said, the weather will calm overnight and the weekend forecast looks very promising. This storm is definitely going to affect the fishing, we'll just have to wait and see how.
January 29, 2008
Sorry, can't report on how the fishing was yesterday as I was unable to get in touch with anyone that was fishing. Wasn't a lot of action on Lake Nipissing yesterday. Dan has some work to do at the huts today so is going to drop a couple of lines while he's at it. Will let you know if he has any luck...
January 28, 2008
It was mild and sunny most of the day yesterday so the morning run was pretty slow as was the rest of the day. It became overcast around 3:00 p.m. so I took a chance and went out for a few hours. I caught two nice size perch and my limit +2 in pickerel. Caught two keepers and then had two huge hits but lost them both on the way up. Next hit I did manage to land it (was likely the same fish all 3 times) but she was 21" long so had to release her. Caught another keeper (3 so far) and then another slot line that was 18". Caught one more keeper and then headed home. In other words, the morning and afternoon fish sucked but the run in the early evening was as good if not better than the day before. Going to be a busy week for me so don't know if I'll get out again and we don't have a group fishing until Thursday but will try to keep you posted on the fishing elsewhere. Conditions aren't going to be favourable as it's suppose to rain hard tomorrow with rain/snow mix on Wednesday so may not be a lot of fishing going on.
January 27, 2008
Lake Nipissing is giving up her bounty big time!! Fish are on!! All of our huts were producing great this weekend. Ted's group figured they caught over 70 fish, Frank's group over 60 fish, Shawn's group over 50 with at least 16 walleye's 8 of which were keepers. Everyone pretty much caught their limits of wally's yesterday but it was a matter of having them in the slot or not. We are currently fishing in 32 - 34 feet of water and are finding the runs start in the deeper water and goes into the shallower. Pickerel run in the morning starts around 8:00 and starts again around 3:30. Some huts said they were running at 4:30 so who can figure a fish out? Lots of perch, some pike, herring and whitefish also caught. No mud puppies to date that we've heard about. LOL. For my experience on the ice yesterday, check out our daily blog.
January 26, 2008
Sweet!! Walleye runs are definitely on and the guys are doing well. Caught them during last night's run which started around 3:30. Run started again this morning around 8:00 and every hut was catching 'em. Fishing's really good right now just wish I had less time to work and more time to play. Getting out there for sure tomorrow afternoon if not today.
January 25, 2008
Sorry but we didnt' have anyone fishing yesterday. We have a big group out there this morning and more coming in for noon so will let you know tomorrow how the warm front/new pressure system is affecting the fishing.
UPDATE: Dan did a minnow run around 11:00 and 6 men out of Ted Childs group had caught 14 walleye which were keepers and had several they had to let go. The run started aruond 8:00 this morning. They also have a nice pike and lots of perch. It was non stop for them this morning and they said the same thing as the last group...didn't have time to even have a drink due to their lines constantly going off. Also said they coulda done with just one line each. We'll have to see what time the run is late afternoon...
January 24, 2008
I don't know about everyone else on Lake Nipissing but our group did great yesterday. Dan dropped the first bunch off at 9:00 a.m. and they had non-stop bites for over an hour to the point they complained they couldn't have a drink or cigarette 'cause they were constantly on their lines. Biting continued throughout the day and the walleye run came through around 4:00 p.m. They managed to keep 5 so were pretty happy. Also caught a pike earlier in the day. We all had a wonderful fish fry that evening. Thanks to all the cooks!!
January 23, 2008
The general concensus is that Lake Nipissing is really slow to terrible right now but our spot seems to be doing pretty good. I went out yesterday afternoon and it was pretty much non-stop action with a few lag times. I caught 11 perch just myself but no walleye - notta one. If you want to know just how resilient pickerel are, here's a fish story for you. There is currently an inch of water under the hut I was in yesterday and one of the perch I tried to release didn't go down the hole. I got down on the floor of the hut with the ice strainer to get the little sucker to move towards the hole (which it did) but while I was at it, there's a friggin' walleye swimming around on it's side in the water under the hut. The thing was a really good size but in the slot and I finally managed to get a grip and it twisted and went right down the hole. What's so special about this is that fish must have been caught on the weekend by the Miller group and it survived under the hut in one inch of water from at least Sunday afternoon until I got it down the hole late Tuesday. Too cool!!
UPDATE:
The spot Ponch suggested we try because he thinks the fishing will be really good there...some of the guys fished there all afternoon and only caught one little perch. There ya go. The fish are there in the early spring but not in the winter...
January 22, 2008
Fishing still excellent. Terry caught a nice size pike yesterday, Jay caught the biggest walleye - just over the slot, very nice fish. Dave caught the most perch so everyone was pretty happy with the day's catch. A few of us are going to a spot we've been wanting to try which is by the channel of "Whiskey" Island right in our bay as Ponch, a friend of ours swears there'll be fish there. I wanna go down as saying right now I think he's wrong but we'll find out. Low pressure has come in and there are flurries happening for today so we'll see how it affects the fishing in our regular spot.
January 21, 2008
Well Jeff, I guess you've already heard by now that you missed a great ice fishing trip. We were sorry you couldn't make it but your Dad (Frank) told me last night while we were having a cocktail that he was actually able to take some fish home with him this trip. Maybe if you're really nice to him, he'll share Lake Nipissing's bounty with you!!! Fishing was really good yesterday although alot of slot line walleye caught again. Guys are doing really well again this morning. In Dan's words "we're nailing them right now". This is currently happening at 10:30 this morning. Will keep you posted on the afternoon/dusk fish...
January 20, 2008
I needn't have worried about how the fishing was going to be yesterday due to the cold temps because our guys did awesome. Lots of walleye, perch, herring and a ling were caught through the day. Lots of slot line wally's so had to go back but all in all everyone was pretty happy. The Miller group told us this spot is better then the one we had last year even though we're not much further from the old spot. Could just be a fluke but we do know where the fish are it's just gauging the depth they are currently running in. Walleye were biting first thing this morning but hitting light and most were missed. Miller's caught the first walleye of the day - keeper...
January 19, 2008
Fish were definitely biting yesterday. The afternoon run was great for perch. One whitefish was caught by our group but they didn't have much luck with the walleye. Could have something to do with the fact they brought their own bait and were fishing with pinheads or it could have something to do with their reflexes (I know the shape they were in when they came off the ice LOL).
January 18, 2008
I took a break from my bookwork duties yesterday and went out around 2:45 until 4:00. Caught 11 perch and 2 walleye myself. Also had several more perch on the line but slowly pulled it up then let it slacken so they would get off the hook. Didn't feel like cleaning any fish or keeping any so let them all go. Fishing very good on Lake Nipissing but don't know how this high pressure/cold front will affect them over the next few days. Walleye run seems to be early afternoon this past week but that could very much change.
January 17, 2008
Fishing has picked up throughout the week. Was excellent yesterday. Run started at 2:30 yesterday afternoon and hit bigtime around 4:00. Limits in walleye but not too many perch. Should stay that way until Saturday night when the cold front moves through.
January 16, 2008
Fishing was good yesterday during the morning runs. Constant bites in the afternoon but started to fall off during late afternoon. Sun came out and the cold front came through so that's probably got lots to do with it.
January 15, 2008
Fishing picked up and there are definite runs now. With the current weather things should stay the same for a few days anyhow. They are calling for a front to come in which may affect the fishing but we'll just have to see. Catching in about 30' of water in the big part of Lake Nipissing, still in around 15' in Callander Bay.
January 14, 2008
Sorry but don't have a fishing report to add today. Haven't heard how it is on the lake or how it's been the past couple of days. Will have more to report tomorrow as I'm going to make some calls later today.
January 11, 2008
Since we aren't running this weekend I called around a few places to see how the fishing has been. Dale Jones (owns Dale's Bait) always gets the scoop on the fishing and stated that the fishing has really slowed down ever since the storm came through. That's not to say people aren't catching fish but the runs aren't predictable, if at all. Lake Nipissing got stirred up and with alot of the tributaries running it's affecting the fishing. Need a few days of calm and cold (which we are starting to get) and hopefully the fishing will pick up in a day or two.
January 10, 2008
Fishing has been excellent all over Lake Nipissing - at least that's the general concensus. I do have to say I'm not impressed with the people fishing at Deep Water Point. When Dan was out searching for our huts yesterday he said there are tons of small perch and lots of pike strewn all over the lake that people just tossed. If you're not going to eat the fish people, either give it to someone who will or throw it back. What do you think happens to all that fish when the ice melts? I hope it ends up at your backdoor and really smells up your yard!!
January 9, 2008
Considering the stress everyone's going through at the moment, fishsing is awesome. Reports from around the lake is that the fishing has picked back up since the low pressure went through on Sunday. The walleye run went through this morning but with the windy conditions coming through today, don't know how the run will be this evening.
January 6, 2008
Morning fish was good but slow during the afternoon and early evening walleye run. Low pressure system sticking around for several days but fishing still really good on Callander Bay from what we hear.
January 5, 2008
Fishing fell off today likely due to the low pressure system that came in over Lake Nipissing. Still biting though, just not as lively as yesterday.
January 4, 2008
Our guys are happy. Several perch bites in early morning but walleye run went from about 8:45 to 10:00 a.m. Big ling and several pike caught throughout day and then it got busy again around 4:30 with the walleye and perch. Word from several locals I spoke to - everyone is doing very well this year in their private fishing holes.
January 3, 2008
Lake Nipissing gave up her bounty once again. Non-stop action all afternoon with really good size perch. Lots of walleye misses...Things slowed down until a large pike was caught but the pickerel (walleye) run was slow, we think due to the pike being around. The one group that had never been here before did mention that in the past 3 years fishing elsewhere, they caught more fish here in just one afternoon.
January 2, 2008
Holy fish batman!! I've never gotten skunked on Lake Nipissing, I've caught a 5 lb. whitefish and over a 5 lb. pike but yesterday afternoon I landed the biggest walleye I've caught to date on this lake. Unfortunately, I had to release it as it was 59 cm. (2 cm. off being over the slot line) and 3.7 lbs. Did managed to keep 3 wally's for supper and a 12" perch so Lynn "brought home the bacon and fried it up in the pan!!!". General consensus on the lake is fishing is really good and there are a lot of big wally's being caught this year. Let's hope everyone adheres to the regulations like I did!!
January 1, 2008
Yeah baby!!! Fish is definitely on this year!! Was quite exciting today. Lots of action and steady bites from 3:30 on. Good size perch, walleye and hit some pike but didn't get them up - they just came around to be a nuisance by tangling the lines. Was a high pressure today but low coming through over the next few days so will see how it affects the fishing.
November 1, 2007
Certainly won't be any fishing going on today. Winds are gusting to 40 km/ph with huge white caps. Just for your information...there was a segment on the news this morning stating that the French River's water is contaminated with green/blue algae and should not be used at all for any type of consumption/use even with boiling. Don't know if this will affect the fisheries or not and the broadcast didn't indicate as such.
October 31, 2007
This is our first entry for the daily fishing report. Sorry fellas and all other fishing fanatics, there really isn't much exciting to report right now but if we hear anything, will certainly update immediately.
